Has any one tried to use an electricly driven power steering pump?
I was thinking about maybe getting an electricly driven hydraulic pump out of some wrecked vehicle and using that to run power steering.

I've never heard of it being retrofitted into a car, but several OEMs use it. I know that the Mazda3 and 5 use elecric pumps, but are not simply a power/ground hookup type of set up. Might be a place to look though.

I would think that most automotive Electric/hydraulic Pumps wouldn't put out enough volume. I only see a small advantage to be gained in rear wheel HP and MPG.
Now having said that a well engineered electrically driven PS system would be way cool, not to mention the bragging rites.

I would start by finding out the flow and pressure on a stock pump so I had some idea what I was looking for in a replacement. Remember that a stock pump spends most of it's time at zero pressure. it's not until the spool valve is biased from input via the steering wheel that pressure is created in the circuit. Flow however is constant. 1967 Novas used a "power assisted steering" system that was a variation on the common power steering system used today. you might find some design ideas looking at that system.

i've heard some '88 fieros had an electric power steering
pump,but i do not know any details

yes some cars use electric power steering. Believe some corvette's have electric magnetic assist power steering. Uses magnets on the steering shaft and no hydro driven pump. This can and has been done before many times on factory cars.
