No Power Steering?

Hi I have built a new 383 for my 91 Z28. I had put on a new remanufactured PS pump when I was assembling the motor. It's been a few years, now that I have finally got the motor started, and I have no power steering.

The car has been pushed around w/o a motor, so I know the lines and some of the gearbox has been drained.

I have read up on bleeding the PS system, and I have tried this, but still nothing.

A few mistakes I made: When I originally started the new engine with the new pump, the pump was dry, I forgot to fill it (I was so concerned with other items). Then when I did fill it, I used the Lucas Power Steering fluid, mostly for the gearbox, which I did not replace. The lucas stuff was so thick, I thought it was too heavy to bleed. After I still wasn't getting power steering, I sucked all the lucas out and put in regular PS fluid. I lifted the front end again and slowly worked the wheel back and forth between idle and 1600RPM (bleeding). Still no PS. When I did bleed it last, I was getting short bursts of assistance, but I was also getting some noise with it that was not very convincing.

Before replacing the pump again, are there any suggestions?

How long do you have to bleed it for, should I keep going even with the noise?

Thanks

Re: No Power Steering?

Well got home last night, checked the fluid, and it was low, this was a good sign as there wasn't fluid on the floor! I jacked up the front and bled the system some more. There were more noises, but they were more of the pump working rather than the nasty noises I was hearing before.

Once I went back and forth more, check the fluid, it was down again! Again, good sign, the fluid is finally being circulated. I topped it off more, kept bleeding till it wasn't going through fluid any more. I dropped it, and now I have assisted steering, it's a great thing!

I'm glad I didn't have to replace the pump.
