tpi or tbi

I have a 350TBI in my 88 bird, but I recently got the whole TPI setup for free. So is it worth it to put it in? I know it gets better response and fuel economy, but is there enough difference for all the work? Also it was off a 305 so i would have to mess with the computer(and i know nothing about it). Thanks

Hmmm......tough call. TPI is expensive to work with, that is if you want to make it breath into higher rpm's your gonna spend some $$$$. I would imagine you would need larger fuel injectors as well to properly feed your 350, as well as a new fuel pump. There is a lot to consider as to whether or not it would be worth it. TPI has many more after market parts and is proven to work. TBI is much less expensive, easier to work with, and really hasn't been given enough attention in the world of racing. I think it is very possible to use TBI and make power, but thats my opinion. You could always sell the tpi- I see them go for $300-$600 on ebay, and use that money to beef up your engine.

My dad gained 17 HP and 70 TQ at the wheels after switching his 305 TBI to TPI. I'd guess you would gain even more on your 350 TBI. You'll need to convert the wiring harness and computer too, dont forget. Its a bit of a hassle, but you'll enjoy the new found power of a TPI swap.

Alot of the difference between the 2 motors (305 TBI and 305 TPI) is in the heads, the exhaust, and in some cases the cam. Without doing those you will get far less than the 35 to 50 HP that the 2 motors differed by from the factory.

IMHO it would be way too much maze for too little cheese, to just swap the induction systems. But in conjunction with those other things, which would have a huge impact on the motor even with the TBI still on it, it might be worthwhile.
