i use hightack o nthe machined surface of the block for the pad, water pump, timing cover, it's reat for holding things in place. ultracopper rtv for the main seal and cap, any pans and around water passage on the intake gasket. i use k&w copper in a spray can o nthe head and intake runner gaskets. if the engine is in the car i use ultracopper instead of the china wall gaskets, if it's out of the car i use the rubber china wall gaskets with high tack or ultracopper to hold them in place. for the head bolts and other water bolts i use pst by locktite

And it all starts with having the surfaces as clean as possible. A rotary wire cup brush in a die grinder does a very nice job of polishing the surfaces and cleaning off every last bit of gasket material and corrosion. Once clean, the surfaces really don't need a lot of sealants to help the gaskets seal perfectly.
