Head casting #'s
Head casting #'s
I went out in the garage and wrote all the casting #'s down.
The vortecs where 10239906.I am not sure if that is the right #.The other heads didn't have that many #'s.
The heads that are on the motor I am building are. 482824.I know nothing about these heads.I am pretty sure they have the smaller valves and stuff.
The other heads I have are supposedly off a 327.The # for them is 785896.The guy I bought my camaro said these are really good heads.I have no clue.If I was to put regular heads on it.Which would be better these or the one's that are on the motor.
Any help would be great.

906 is one of the Vortec castings, it is the less preferred one due to the seat configuration.
482824 does not exist. However, 462624 is pure unadulterated dog plop. They are stock 400 and 170 HP 350 heads. Crap of the absolute worst order. Please destroy them immediately, do your part to erase this disgrace from the collective memory.
The other number doesn't look like a Chevy head casting number at all. However, 3785896 is a 63-65 283 head. Again, garbage; those came on the low-perf 2-barrel motors. It won't have accessory bolt holes of course.

So what do you suggest I do?I am probably going to get the vortecs redone. With the machine work they need for the different springs,Screw in studs, stiffer springs and new stock size valves annd seats.
So I should throw those other heads in the garbage?Sounds like a plan to me.

The vortecs are the way to go.
Any deficincy in flow on the exhaust side with the pressed in
hardened seat (906 head) can be improved with carefull blowl blending and porting below the valve seat.
The exhaust ports respond nicely to general/generic
home porting blending methods and a three angle valve job.
Stepping up to a 1.60" exhaust valve wouldn't hurt either.
See you local automotive machinist about it. he should be able to fix ya up.

i believe i too have a set of the 482824 head castings in my garage. It definately looks like an "8" not a "6". Who knows I am no where near an expert. I asked this question before since they have accessory holes and some people were telling me that they were camel hump heads...??
