Wierd/annoying/rare starting problem....advice please
I thoguht this was just my car, but a co-worker knew the problem since it happened to his 91 firebird occassionally as well.
Sometimes when I go to start the car it will not start. No noise, the lights come on, just the starter does not go. IT is like trying to start the car in gear, but it is in park. I cant even hear any noise from the starter. There is no response.
If I wait 10 minutes the car "fixes" itself and starts up normally, anyone else have this problem?
IT only seems to happen when I really need to be somewhere....its pretty annoying at times, but it rarely happens.

I just had that problem yesterday and some of the guys in the tbi board helped me out. Turned out to be my VATS system. Apparantly the system "reads" the wrong resistance from the key. Hope this helps.

if it were the key that would be wierd because it probably does a good 200 starts and then does a mysterious no start. If it were the key wouldnt it do that more often?

when you try to turn the key, move the gear shifter to the left a little bit. you might have to pull it down and over to the left. Hold it there while you are turning the key.
my car would do that all the damn time. whenever it would get warm. turned out to be the nuetral safety switch. it wasn't getting a good connection when it would get warm, and i had to hold the gear shifter at an angle to get it to start.
i didn't figure it out for a long time. changed starter 3 or 4 times, put a heat shield on the solenoid....finally i leaned on th gear shifter while i was trying to start it....and wa la!
if that does fix it, jus pull the center counsel up, and it's like 4 screws to get it out.
hope this helps....
