I have a question regarding a rocker stud removal and tapping guide tool...

Mine doesn't align properly. I have the Proform tool which after searching the internet is the only type I've seen available. Just under different names. Either the positioning hole for the arbor will have to be enlarged or slotted. I'm leaning towards slotting it like Vader's shown here http://216.121.161.76/files/RockerStudReplacement.pdf

Has anyone else had any success with these tools? Did they perfectly line up? Proform's tech has proved to be useless. Vader if you see this, where did you buy yours?





What I'm thinking about doing. I am just checking because, I don't want to junk my heads...

i level the stud bosses and use a tap wrench for a drill chuck in a drill press or vertical mill. not sure how close you could get it free hand, but if you're good you could be pretty damn close.

Having never used one of these before, what's the point in having a guide for the tap? You can't change the geometry of the existing hole...even if you could via the tool, then you'd have less thread to grab on one side of the hole.

Am I missing something here?

Ede, that's what I figured. I could probably get pretty close free hand, even though I really rather not. Some of my equipment is still in storage so I won't be using my drill press it looks like. Considering just having the machine shop tap them when I get them pressure tested. Even though I rather just tap them myself. Hence buying the POS proform tool.

Mike, if the tapping guide actually centered over the stud boss, it looks like it would do the job. It centers forwards-backwards but not side to side. That's why I'm thinking of just notching the arbor side(rightside in the 3rd picture). The second and third pics are a little blurry, even though the tap is present, not the arbor like the 1st pic. I saw Vader's has a notch in his .pdf, so maybe that's the way to go right now. Either it will work, or the tool becomes scrap metal. I was only planning on tapping for Mr. Gasket 1076's.

Actually, a hole can be hand-tapped out of line with the drilled hole. It's fairly easy to do with a coarse thread, and a little harder to do with a finer thread. You usually can tap the first 5-7 threads before the required torque increases to the point where you realize you're not following the hole. On some installations (especially with guide plates) that's about all the stud thread you'll have in the head, so be careful to start straight. A mill, drill press, or even a hand tapping table helps hold the tap perpendicular to the surface, but it is important to indicate the head into a vertical position before starting the tap when using those.

Thanks guys, but I slotted it and it taps correctly now. Did like the 3rd pic above. Tapped 2 adjacent stud bosses and they are straight and true. Probably not so good for pulling studs anymore, but I could use washers on the next set I pull. At least the tool was useable for this set.
