High mileage fbodies, still beaten on?

Not quite sure if this is the right forum....

My 88 Iroc has 192000 miles, and I still race it and, well, not exactly baby it lol.

Any other people out there just plain sick of others with low mileage nice looking cars ?

Also, any recent problems with the car related to mileage? I just did the rear main seal, valve cover gaskets, and the oil pressure sending unit... stopping my oil leaks!

Well my 86 IROC has almost 86,000 miles on it. I don't beat on it but I don't baby it either. I don't race it or do brakestands, but if I'm driving and there's a clear stretch of road in front of me I won't hesitate to put my foot way down.

She dont look to pretty tho .. bondo on rear 1/4 and is in black primer but at least its fun to drive

My GTA has 152K I still drive it pretty hard, nothing to abusive but I have no problem doing 180 turns with the rear end sliding or punching it and driving 125 down the freeway. I have started mellowing out though because I am not prepared to fix any major problems.

My 85 z28 has 194k miles on it and I'm rebuilding the motor now. The shortblock looked good, but the timing chain was toast. I beat on it pretty good too...

My v6 89 bird has 280.000, and is in pretty good shape, and still runs pretty ***, I dont know if the marker is bad, or the previous owner changed the motor.

185K on my 305, which is now sitting in the driveway. I beat the crap out of it since 150K since I knew I was getting a new motor. I ain't gonna throw it out though. Gonna make it a pet project.

my 91 has 193,000+ miles on her. she runs good and I dont hesitate one second to get on it.
I floor it constantly, do burn outs with it, and do an occasional break stand(its the easy way to impress and I love the huge cloud of smoke that I get doing it)
I also know the previous owner was some punk kid, so she didnt have an easy life b4 me eather.

I do take care of her thoe. if theres a problem it gets fixed, all regular maintence gets done and she regularly gets washed and waxed. upgrades are performed as I can afford them.

My '90 firebird had 194,427 miles on it when I pulled the 3.1L out of it. The V6 still ran strong when I removed it. I installed an L98, removed the L98 for something a little more custom, and it has 202,000 miles on it right now, and I still enjoy driving it. I'm not hard, not easy on it. Simply put, take care of it, and it will take care of you.

97k on my 1990 L98...

to save gas, i baby it down the street, but the moment someone passes me by thinking im slower than a geo metro, i show him whats up and slam on the gas. i've had idiots in COROLLAS trying to race me... i mean, even though it's a waste of gas to fly right past him, i want to let him know that he CAN'T f*ck with me... im not going to let him think that im too scared to go after that 4 cyl. piece of sh*t or whatever car it may be (if it's within my kill range or it's on a street i know is known for cops to go down)... i may not have a z06, but i sure as hell don't have a geo metro! down here in miami, most people i come across on the street think camaro's are SLOWER than the 7 days it took g0d to create the earth, and that's mainly because the majority of the gooks in miami are import dorks that think civic hatch backs with gs-r engines are COOL! ever since i got the car in early september, i've had a NUMBER of run-ins with morons thinking they could beat me (dunno wtf they were thinking) because i have an older camaro that looks slow... but im starting to get a reputation on the streets now that i can definately live with

but yea i kinda got off subject. i usually baby the car to save gas... but whenever i feel the need, i speed and if im in the mood for a kill or a donut in the publix parking lot, no one's gonna stop me unless he's got lights on the roof of his car, lol

my 86 has 160k (if not 260k) miles on the chassis. it was beat pretty good but she's in good hands now! engine has 60k (in the process of redoing lots of othe engine), and a stronger rebuilt tranny and underhood wire harnesss with about 3k-4k on them

mine is also a salvage/restoration title... but I'm obviously the only one who has attempted any restoration

oh yea, I forgot to mention, I swear I can hear a "toilet flush" sound in my gas tank everytime I step on the gas... LOL!

i just had it worse then that... i drove a Uhaul full of my grandmothers stuff from Springfield,MA to Charleston,SC.....

you realize what a PITA it is for people to let you in, around and thru when you have a uhaul?

everyone assumes you're slow.... its a brand new F350 with a big box on the back.... it had no problems crusing at 80.... the entire time i was in new england though, i had to drive agressively just to merge..... you know, do the whole, "move or i'll hit you" thing just to get a spot

I have 239,000 on my 86 I auto-x it and beat on it often. I'm not too worried about the motor, I have a fresh 350 on the stand. It eats a little oil, from the valve stem seals. Car has some squeaks and rattles but overall for as hard as I drive, it has held up remarkable.

My car sees redline everyday. And I only work like 2 miles from my house.

If I wanted to baby something, it would be a completely mint, stock to the 8-track car that was... uhhh, actually worth something. My ride has 250,000+ KM's on it now.

3rd gens, especially the earlier ones, are worth absolutely nothing. A guy I work with picked up an '84 firebird in really, really decent shape with low miles on it for $900 canadian pesos, with the stock LG-4 in good shape. I told him how thats what I started off with, then took him for a ride in my car and scared the sh*t out of him. Wow, I didn't think a low 14sec car was that fast, but ok... Then we re-did his lame timing curve, threw in some better sec. rods/hangers into his carb, and he came back grinning. Yeah, another one has been bitten by the speed bug.

Seeing as how the only thing original on my car is the steering wheel and the gas pedal, which I'm surprised I haven't stomped through the floor by now, it gets riden hard and put away wet.
Why not? So long as you stay outta trouble.

Gee I think ive got the lowest mileage 82 non show car out there 88k. I dont baby it and pound on it when I get the itch, but I dont go go go every time I drive it. I got it to drive and play with not to self destruct, I personally plan on keeping the 3 in my sig for a very long time G0D willing.

I've got 77k on my 82 305 LG4

I really don't think thats high mileage. I would say that 85% of the time I drive it I've got the pedal to the floor and don't let it shift until at least redline

If and when it breaks a 383 is gonna take its place

Great to know that these cars are still being used for what they were made for; throughout their entire life!

man i feel left out, i rarely beat on my car and i havent burned out at all with it since i put in the t5, mine gets floored...once a month or something like that, ive probably raced on the street five times in the 2 years ive had it if that. maybe thats why nothing ever breaks...

oh yea 132k on the car, 98k on the tranny and about 70k on the engine.

lets see, ill start my list
85 SC: i drove it 6K HARD miles, im talkin neutral drops, burnouts, redline constatly. it died at about 187K
89 RS: 10K miles between me and the guy i sold it to, that car had the worst 10K of its life, died in a accident 2 weeks ago
94 Camaro: 167,892 and counting, i drive this car hard but not to hard, never redline, burnouts maybe 2 times a week. change the oil about every 5K or so. leaks a quart of oil a week and a gallon on antifreeze in a week.

if i bought a nice low mileage camaro/firebird, id drive it nicely, but these arent nice low mileage cars. they arent worth much to anyone except the owner sometimes.

i am sure your car will last a long time but if i where you i would build a engine so when it does go you have a replacement because you never know i had a 88 formula 350 and the engine spun a bearing st 74,000 so who knows what can happen every engine is different.

my friend has a 84 LG4 that he bought with 450,000km on it. blown headgasket from overheating. Swapped in a big cam when he did the gasket and left everything else stock except headers. Revs it to 7000rpm occasionally and its got over 600,000km on it now still running strong. A bit of a knock when he starts it in the morning.

Got a 357000 km (227000 mile) 305 TBI that still keeps going. Runs faster now than it did all stock. Now only got stock cam, heads, intake and exhaust log cast manifolds.

15.4@93 mph

i got a 90 formula with 126k on her and i dont burnout often but i love to race, altho i only race once a week or if im lucky to find it 2-3 times, around here the **** is afraid to race me, they all drive slower than me and for some reason never wanna race i would love it if they wanted to race but they never try, my car is nothing special either... gotta love the sound of the exhaust of a 305 TBI when it is revving high, i gotta hear that at least once a day, soon i will have new exhaust and a LT1 to hear the high revving exhaust out of tho...

The BODY of my girl is perfect, and shes pushing 230,000 km. THe paint is almost perfect xcept in a few key areas. If not for the fact I want my own touch to her, I'd leave the paint the way it was.

1988, 15 years old and shes still ticking .

Altho the mechanical has NO original parts left on it, but thats besides the point

Got 99K on my 305 and I drive the car like it should be driven. I let it warm up and drive it easy and keep the R's down till I pass this one kids house and give it about half and short shift doing a burnout the whole time and I race it maybe once a week at the track or on the street. My car wasnt taken care of that well but wasnt beeten on but the rings are pretty bad because the oil seems to turn to gas a week after you change the oil. This kid has a 87 GTA and he beats the crap out of his, brings it up to 6 grand when he revs it for no reason and brings it up to 6 while he floors it down the street right after he started it in middle of Winter. I would have to say that one thing I'v noticed is I'v watched his car get slower and slower as time goes on. It seams that way with my car. With some small bolt on's like headers, MSD, chip, and cold air kit the car ran a 14.7 recently at the track but it has a lifter tick and seams to be getting slower right after I do something to make it faster it slows down a bit. But I'm happy with a 14.7 on a tired 305. I said screw it and I'm picking up my 383 from the engine builer in a couple of days if he's done with it since he's been busy with everyone's end of the season race stuff. I know THOSE rings will be good.

which part do you think is bull****? I don't know for sure if its true but its my friend/mechanics car and I trust him. Maybe he had bad info from whoever he bought it off, maybe for some reason they wanted him to think it had 450,000km on the original motor so they could sell it for less? He runs synthetic and changes the oil a lot and normally seems to baby it. It does have a big cam in it i've heard it run. btw, notice i said 450,000 kilometers not miles. Didn't have time to do the conversion. So its somewhere around 380k miles now.

I'd never rev a brand new 305 to 7k... let alone one with 380000 miles on it

Well he revs it to 7K on the factory tach, so it could be reading high, i brought that up to him and he agreed but said it's turned at least 6500. This guy also has a 69 Camaro RS thats a little bit less tame than the 84.

if the factory tach reads it as 7k...... its WAY off...

his engine cant even rev that high if you floored it till it went boom... valve float would stop it first...

the tach gets mroe and more inaccurate the higher the numbers go.... he probly has one thats pretty far off though.

Yeah youre right about that, but i hope she will last much longer. Doesnt consume any oil at all and running really strong.
