Stupid Question....and codes.

I was wondering how exactly you check for codes with a paper clip? LOL, I don't know which wire or anything, so could someone point me in the right direction. I know it's probably already been posted about checking for codes but, I gotta question I asked a while back I want to go ahead and get fixed. When I let the car idle for a bit, like sitting in a fast food line length of time (not long), a check engine light comes on, and while it don't sound like $h!t, it don't sound as happy as if I just pulled in and started sitting. I was told it could be a bad sensor, and I'm sure that would throw a code, what you guys think? Thanks.

Look for the ALDL (assembly line diagnostic link) assy which is located under the dash by the drivers right knee. It has twelve terminals and you want to jumper Pins "A" & "B" with a paper clip (poor mans diagnostic tool). These are the two pins at the top right hand side of the ALDL. After you put the paper clip into Pin "A" & "B", turn the key to the on position. You will hear the fans come on, this is normal so don't worry about it. After you turn the key to on, the check engine light will come on and start flashing the codes stored in the computer. It will flash each code three times before going to the next stored code. It will do this until all codes have shown, then it will repeat the cycle. The first code shown is alway 12, this code is nothing to worry about, it is normal.
