i'm guessing a lot. from the little bit of time i spent in college writing programs for cnc machines i know it takes a while to write and takes longer to work out the bugs. on the plus side after you have it figured out you have it forever.

I could do it for $850.00 a pair and still make money. Set it up, push "CYCLE START" and go in for dinner. Cool. A few pairs of heads would pay for a used-but-nice 20-taper mill...

You'd need some really good 3D software with that old Mazak vertical to really do it right. I have a few programs at work on Virtual Gibbs 3D, and a fully ported bowl takes a lot of work. I actually port matched a set of Dart II's on a MV-40 Mori Seiki Vertical (intake and exh)w/ Smartcam SM9, but I've yet to do a full porting job. But you're right, after the bugs were worked out, You could do 'em all day for $850. I'd take a .25 carbide inserted ball-nose, and run it about 4500rpm - 30in/min -- Maybe 3500 - 15in/min for cast, and have a cycle time of about 3.5 - 4 hours - $850 is good money for that amount of time, huh??

Moris are a nice, heavy tool. Mazaks are light and cheap. (Why I mentioned them - cause I'm cheap, too!)
Fanuc conversationals would work nicely, and I was thinking a shperical cutter as well - even for the final finish on the chambers. The aluminum would load fast, even with the right coolant (then there's the soaping problem). Cast would be a breeze if you didn't mind the mess. I've been thinking of hunting down a small NC mill for a while, but even the E-Z Tracs are a bit pricey right now. If you have a couple mill to spare, you could get me a nice five-axis for my birthday.
However, I'm not that fond of the advert slogan "For the best head, see Vader." Not in this lifetime....

Maybe you should start a cylinder head porting company. Then you could go about getting incorporated. After you were a corporation, you could issue stock to raise the money to get the machines that you needed...Vader Cylinder Heads, Inc., sounds good to me .
The new Mori Seiki SV-40 4th axis Vertical I'm running now only cost about $320,000 . The machine I ran up until about 3 mos ago was a Mori-Seiki MH-40 4 axis Horizontal and it was bought used for S180,000.
And a well-used Mazak (cheapest) with an adequate table sweep to do one head at a time is going for about $35K in operable condition. Since the tolerances required aren't that critical on engine work, a fairly "loose" machine would suffice for a while. A good production machine capable of holding close to original tolerances would be in the $100K range if you found a desperate seller.
