Depends on how the car is driven. For low end power good idle, sure it will be fine. If you want maximum power and you have a good short block I would go with something in the 244-254 range.

What trans do you run, what gear do you have, and what shift point do you want?

I will be using a built 700R4 with about a 2800RMP stall with 3.23 gears. Shift points dont really matter to me. I guess I want as big as I can go without sacrificing idle quality. I know the LT4 HotCam works perfect in a 350 (ZZ430) for example. So i assumed with more cubes, that cam might be getting a little on the small side.

What are the .050 duration numbers on the HOTcam, 218/228 isn't it? Assuming so I think that's a little on the small side.

Just for reference I've saved a couple mag buildups on 406s, they have all had good luck w/ around a 230/236 @.050 cam (I believe they both used a CompCams hyd cam, a XE274 I want to say) w/ a carbed setup (Performer RPM, Iron Eagle 200cc heads). I believe the miniram would run well w/ the same cam. The particular 406 buildups I've got made around 440-450hp at 5300-5500 rpm w/ around 500 ft-lbs down at 4000 rpm, great torque down low too. So not a strictly high rpm setup even w/ that size cam... I'll have to see if I can dig up the articles for specifics. With a roller cam w/ more lift than the XE274, and the AFRs (I believe they flow a little better than the Iron Eagles) you should make some good power.

Although it is usually better to err on the side of smaller when it comes to cams...

The cam would be perfect for everyday driving, subtle and smooth. Planting the tires will be a severe problem though.

IMHO it's too small.

I've had the Comp XE274H in my (carbed) 400, it was a pretty good match to my much smaller system (Performer intake, Edelbrock TES, GM 186 heads with port work). I've got a Comp XR282HR in it now which has the same .050" duration specs but is a whole lot more cam. Since you're already considering a roller cam in a non-roller block, the 282 would be a far better choice than the wimpy GM cam. I'm not sure you can use the GM one anyway, because the block you have won't have the factory's retainer arrangement, so you'll have a timing set mismatch. You might be able to use the later-model style of cam gear and a cam button for the original design of roller system, I don't know for sure about that. You definitely would have to use the original design roller lifters, not the factory's kluge. But it's not enough cam for the rest of that setup in any case. Go with a bigger aftermarket one.

What is idle quality?
