I want to use my hyd. roller cam in my 406

I know this topic has kinda been beaten to death,...but when searching for this information, I'm getting kinda confused.

I want to use my hyd. roller cam in a 73' 406 block. I still have my 350 roller block with all parts sitting in my garage.

So, to use my cam what will I need to do with the following?:

cam - can I use mine, or do I have to get some kind of retro fit cam?

lifters - retro fit I assume

pushrods - new length determined by length checker I assume

timing chain - can I use my true double roller from my 350 or do I have to use an older style?

What else do I need? Part numbers?....

Thanks,
-Frank

You will need a retro-fit setup (cam and lifters). the roller block you have has provisions machined into it for factory roller hardware (Lifter spider and cam retainer plate). No 400 block was ever machined as a roller block like your 350 was.

You need a non-roller timing set. For SBC there are 2 basic types. factory roller or non roller. If you look at your roller cams face, you will see a little step that goes around the perimeter. This is for the cam retainer plate to "grip" (prevents forward cam walk). Because of this, the cam sprocket mounting face is smaller in diameter so a correspinding smaller sprocket is needed. The other kind, the kind that you will need, is the kind for the flat tappet cams. They just have a flat cam sprocket face with no step machined in.

You will need a thrust bearing to prevent cam walk. As to "other parts" that would depend on what you have now and what you plan on replacing/getting.

That's "non-factory-roller".... you should use a true roller (not "bushing roller", "split roller", "truck chain", etc.) timing set; but it has to be for a pre-roller motor.

You can use NOTHING WHATSOEVER from the factory roller setup. It won't fit the older block. Don't ask me why the factory did such a stupid thing as to invent all that stupid incompatible stuff and facbricate incompatible blocks when there was already a design out there in the world at large that had already been used successfully for decades. The rest of us had been building roller motors since probably before some of the "engineers" that came up with that stupidity had even been born.

In my 73 400 block in which I run a hyd roller cam, I most recently used a Comp 3100 timing set, their roller cam button, the "retrofit" roller cam (NOT a factory roller cam), "retrofit" lifters, and whatever push rods were appropriate which I think ended up being .7450" but I could easily be wrong. I happened to use a XR282HR cam.

Yea, should have been more clear. Sorry.
