Can a bad coolant sensor cause a car to run poorly? Code 15 problem! Need answer fast

I got a code 15 on my 86 Trans Am now, which on here indicates a low tempature reading at the engine coolant tempature sensor. Which I knew was bad to begin with, because it wasn't kicking my fan on. So I just said the heck with it and ran the fan manually and didn't worry about the sensor. But the car runs terrible at first startup. If I let it run for a bit and drive it, the SES light will eventually turn off.

Yes! The computer uses the temp of the coolant in many of its calculations to know how much fuel and timing to add. If its reading wrong it will cause the computer to make the car run poorly.
