What kind of mileage does your car get?
My 86' camaro gets 19mpg in the city and 27mpg on the freeway. That's with 3.73 gears and a holley DP. I think it's running a little rich too.
My 87' stock, tpi, 305, auto, 273, T/A only gets 16mpg. What the heck?

Engine: 305TPI

i get 19 town, 24fwy with my bone stock '87 IROC with only mods being a flowmaster 3" catback..
my mileage probably sucks a bit from my cat being burned (burned it when my knock sensor came unplugged) so i should probably be 2-3mpg better than what i'm seeing now..
this is with base timing set at 6BTDC running 87 octane cruising at 70mph in OD... my car is a G92 car so i should have the 3.27 gears, turning 2200rpm at 70

New to this board. My beater Cutlass gets 10-15 twn/hwy if I keep my foot out of it. So I figure about 5mpg.

When I drive like a normal law abiding citizen, I get around 26mpg on the highway. Gotta love highway mode
I'll be ditching the 3:73s soon, I hate them. Back to the original 3:42s. Yes your gas mileage will suffer with 3:73s.

I'm guessing around 10 if I stay out of the throttle. If I feel like playing, it drops to around 6.

Recently tuned my GTA 5.7 and built a ****pit adjustable cold air/ram air system and a few other simple mods. The car has Edelbrock headers and cat-back, no cat (don't tell), 1.6 roller-tip rockers, 3-angle valve job, 3.27 rear and a few other free mods.
Over the weekend, I took a "mileage check" trip and got 30 m.p.g.
Except at stops, never under 55 mph and never over 62 in hilly, curvey country.
On the way back, went over 100 mph twice and 120 once and averaged a pitiful 29.6 mpg. ALTHOUGH that tank did include several miles of intown 30-40 mph driving.
By the way, the ram-air really perked the car up above 85 mph.

Well,
The message censor blanked out my driver's c/o/c/k/p/i/t term.
OK.
Might as well add the car is an '88 GTA and can been seen, through the end of April, on the opening page at www.kyfbodies.org.

lol 260??? try 180...that sucks!!! when you divide that by 16 gallons i get 15 mpg and i cant complain, but after that tank, i filled up (from nearly dry) and it put like 12 gallons in...i thought we were 16 gallons...or am I wrong??? anyway, w/ the 12 gallons, it comes to about 12 mpg mixed driving. thats terible lol highway is much better, dont know off hand. btw I'm on it all the time im sure that doesnt help

The reason, I think, I get such good mileage is because my car has such good throttle response. I have my timing set really high, with a coil and wires. I also have a spreadbore carb, no emissions, cam with 116 lobe sep. and a big overdrive.

you guys are getting way better mileage than me (for the most part). i can't be sure because i need a cable for my speedo, but i think i'm getting around 8 mpg. that is mostly around town, but not much stop n go. and only a few burnouts, too, maybe one or two.

Lately, after my last 3 tanks, I averaged about 18 1/3 mpg combined. I do about 50/50 type driving and I like using the power to get onto the highway. So, I'm sure I'm lowering my mileage by doing that. Anyway, see below to see how I'm equipt...

<sandy> 18 mpg sounds about right for your car. If I were you I'd get a high discharge coil. That would probably up your mileage to 19 even. Was that a list of all your mods? If it is you should get a chip and a muffler also.
<all yall> Yeah I drive my car like a nut too, I have the timing adjusted very well so I barely have to press the gas to get a mouth full of torque and I'm disappointed when I don't get 20 miles per gallon city.

Why do people lie about their gas mileadge so much? Do you guys think it makes you look better or something? I can get almost 24 highway if I never pass 2K on the tach it's more like 20 with normal driving. 27 with a carb, Bullsh)t no way. 42mpg Haha no way I don't care if you idled down hill the whole way. I know you can get better mileadge with a prom and highway mode but how many of actually have that. All you guys claiming 30+mpg come by my house and if you get that good of gas mileadge i'll buy you a tank of gas, and if you can't I want a tank of gas.

Get that free gas ready.
Ask around and see what the factory mileage rating was for the TPI cars. I believe the 1988 GTA 5.7 (like mine) was 24, 25 or 26 highway.
My car has no cat, no smog pump, Edelbrock Jet Hot-coated headers, full 3" Edelbrock exhaust, fully ported plenum, TB bypass, Wells SU145 Mass Air Flow Sensor, pocket ported L98 heads, 1.6 ratio roller-tipped Comp rockers, home-made driver c-o-c-k-p-i-t (hate having the board censor) adjustable ram-air made up with 4" tubing, relocated charcoal cannister, K & N cone shaped filter and larger 3" intake tract tubing, adjustable fuel pressure regulator and fuel gauge, Mobil One oil and more.
The car has Pep Boys Ultra Zs 245-50-16s on front and 255-50-16s on the rear, inflated to 32 psi all-around. Correctly lined front-end, no loose parts.
I've run this car at Beech Bend (Bowling Green, KY), at full weight, no taking out stuff, and hit a best of 14.06 at 99.5 mph but average about 14.1xs.
I have seen 30 m.p.g., in hilly-curvey south-central Kentucky on narrow, unsmooth two lane roads, running between 55 and 62 mph.
I've seen 18 m.p.g. after driving 60 miles to the track, making several runs, then driving back home.
Overall, I start checking things if the normal mileage drops under 24 mpg. I check my timing regularly, my TPS,etc. etc.
You may think I can't get 30 m.p.g., but you would be wrong. I believe, if I tried the 'tricks' to get better mileage, I could see 32 or 33 m.p.g.
If the factory highway ratings are 24, 25 or 26 m.p.g., what makes you think all the work I've done to increase my car's efficiency won't help the mileage?
Afterall, if you burn the gas properly, you have more power and better mileage (except when you get into race set-ups and I can talk those too. Been involved in that scene since the early 1970s).
These cars are sensitive to tune-ups and since most of these cars are getting 'long-in-the-tooth', they are probably in the hands of their third, fourth, or fifth owners, who, in all likelyhood, are young and new to the auto world and don't keep the car at tip-top-condition. Not all, but quite a few of them.
You don't have to be an old geezer like me (45-I can't be 45) to keep your car in shape but these cars are easy to fall out of tune at their age.
I'll conclude by saying that if someone has a mostly stock TPI car (305 or 350) and isn't getting at least 22-24 m.p.g. highway mileage, then there car is out of tune and needs to be looked into.

I used to get 20-22 highway/city. But then I gave it a tune up, put in the chip, t-stat, fan switch, and changed the O2 sensor. After that I got 12-13 mpg. I later checked the timing. Even though the book I had said not to mess with it, I did. But not until I read on here how to do it. It was 3 deg ATDC. I put it at 4 deg. BTDC, but have not ran a tank out of it yet. I am anxious to find out. Trying to keep my foot out of it.

I get at best 20 usually 14. But, I saw some posts about getting alot of miles on a quarter of a tank. The guage isn't that accurate. The first quarter of a tank I get about 29 mpg, but the last quarter I get about 10. For accurate mileage it really should be more than one tank. How can you tell if you filled it up the same exact amount. Most people don't worry about that and get it to the nearest dollar amount. After 10-15 tanks, it starts to average out and become more accurate.

I don't really care what you think about gas mileage dude, having your little doubts about my mileage makes no difference to me. I have no reason to lie I'm paying the gas bill. Try reading a few books about what makes a well matched system and do it for yourself. It's amazing what a little knowledge will do.
But to the people who actually know how to do it smart and tune their engine properly. I get about 21 average but on the freeway I get just about 26-27. The trick is a high output ignition system with a good amount of ignition advance along with a bunch of bolt-ons like headers and stuff. The part throttle torque is amazing. I'm not putting a cam in my car just because I want good mileage through college.
Let's see, how to check your gas mileage........this is a hard one. Gas mileage 101. You fill the tank to full, set your trip to 0 (or use your handy little number recorder on the over head console), drive until your almost empty, fill the tank back up, then divid your miles by gallons required to fill the tank again. Tada you now have your average gas mileage.

As someone else said, if the your 3rd Gen's mpg is low, it needs a tune up, alignment, coil/wires etc.
Don't belive, I couldn't careless.

I don't keep track of the two separately. Living in north Texas, there's a lot of highway/city driving being practically the same thing. Anyway, I get 16 mpg altogether.

You guys have some super cars or something i've never seen a thirdgen (I've owned 2 and a 4th gen) get better than 25 (I got 26 once in the 4th gen) and that was being very grandpa-like. My taurus doesn't even get 30mpg on the highway. Mabey because I live in the city my gas mileadge isn't as good either. On my 89 iroc 350 tpi auto i've had an msd ignition, cap, coil, wires, and ac delco rapid fire plugs so if my ignition wasn't high output enough i'd like to know what is. Couldn't get anywhere near 30mpg never had headers though. What are your secrets? Please tell us.

A general consensus is that of the power available in a gallon of gasoline, 80% is wasted. Out the tailpipe, the radiator, the rotating friction in an engine, driveline losses, etc.
Those numbers are best case scenario.
If you can get above that 20% efficiency, you pick up power as well as better fuel mileage (up to a point when you start having big duration cams, high flow, high rpm heads, etc).
Most everyone on these boards would agree headers help power. Well, if you can keep your foot out of that new found power (and the sound) and drive "sanely" your mileage should go up. Keep in mind an entire free-flowing type exhaust has to be in place. Headers with a clogged cat gets you nowhere.
Most everyone (and there is some debate) agree that roller tip (or full roller) rockers help power. That is because they reduce friction.
As has been said many times on this board, the TPI cars tend to run a little rich. Therefore, if you can get more air into the engine to go with that fuel, you get more power. There are many ways to get more air in. Search these boards. No need to list them here.
A front-end that is out of line will not only wear out your front tires, it kills your mileage. For an easy test, roll a tire normally, then turn it sideways and try to push it sideways. That is what an out-of-line front-end does. Pushes your tires crossways down the road. Low air pressure also hurts mileage. Soft rubber tires grip the road better but hurt mileage. There are compromises in tire design that you have to choose from.
If you have more power at a given rpm, you need to use less 'pedal' to keep that speed (rpm) or when you have to accelerate.
My GTA turns about 2000 rpm at 60 mph with 3.27 gears. I very seldom have to push more than a quarter or half inch to pass other vehicles. However, I can't resist punching it some.
2000 rpm on a TPI car is right in the heart of its torque range. The downside is it runs out of breath at about 4500-5000 rpm.
I spend way more time at 2000 rpm than 4500 rpm (it will do it but at 4500-5000 rpm I'm near 150 mph-which it will do, by the way) so if the engine is at or near its torque peak and you're not 'gunning' it all the time, you should get decent highway mileage.
City driving really kills the mpg for all the obvious reasons-idling wastes fuel and gets you nowhere.
I've read of tests by the manufacturers that found you get better mileage at 55 mph with your air conditioner on and windows closed than if you have them rolled down and the air off. It concerns aerodynamics. The air conditioner eats about 5-7 horsepower but the open window causes quite a bit of drag, which eats up more than that 5-7 horsepower.
As stated in my earlier post, most of the TPI cars were factory highway rated in the 24, 25, 26 mpg range. There are many guys (and gals) that get above 22-24 mpg on the TPIs (and other set-ups) that are totally stock.
Good power and good mileage are not mutually exclusive.
However (and I'm guilty of this at times, also) good power and good sense sometimes are.
Nothing sounds as good as a V-8 in full power mode.
We're not yanking your chain. Above 25 mpg is pretty easy on a well maintained TPI car and 30 is not out of the question.
