Theoretical question
If I had a Chevy 400 cid block, and bored and stroked it what is the maximum Cubic Inches I can get out of it?
Just a question .. and for those wondering I don't have a 400 cid block I'm just learning about bore and stroke and how it all works.

420 or close to it. I wouldn't bore out a 400 just to get the max bore out of it tho. Then it can't be rebuilt normally and thats a problem.

HP on the dyno, ET's on the drag strip what ever #'s you want.
Mods cost money. Just keep that in mind provided you don't make any mistakes.

400's can normally go .030 over, but that is about all I 'd go. It would be a 406ci
It would also be a two piece rear main seal. IE = new starter, flywheel
Most people go 383. 350 block with 400 crank. They make aftermarket 383 cranks that are one piece.

You don't have to build a "stroker" motor to get a 400. It's one of the factory sizes.
Largest one I've ever built, was a 434. That was of course using a factory block.
With aftermarket blocks, you can get real close to 500 CID. 482 is not that uncommon.

As I said, 434 is about as big as you can go in a production block, easily. Every inch past that gets harder and harder. The "difficulty curve" rises pretty steeply.
That's .030" overbore, 4" stroke.
