Help...random fuel pump problem

I was changing the seats in my car and the carpet....and was undoing some of the wiring to make things easier. After getting everything out, I connected the wiring that would be under the carpet up and tried to start the car to make sure everything was working. The car would crank, but not start. I noticed that the fuel guage would not respond at all (stayed all the way down below full). The fuel pump also would not start on. I then noticed that I hadnt connected the ground over by the window switches....I connected that...and the car started up just fine...ran fine....good deal...everything is fine.

After putting the seats back in, and buttoning everything back up....I tried to start the car again. Nothing. Same problem, car would crank but not start. Fuel pump would not come on. Fuel guage was not responding. It was late so I decided i would look at it later. This weekend, had another chance to work on the car. I hooked up the power to the power seats, all that was working great. I then put the key in, and the fuel guage responded....showed I was at half a tank. I tried to start the car. It sounded like it wanted to start..then died. Fuel guage was still working...tried to start the car again....same thing...then the guage stopped working again. Waited five minutes....same thing. Guage would work...wouldnt start...guage wouldnt work.

Does anyone have any ideas what could be wrong? I do need to change the fuel filter...could that be it? I'm really hoping its not the fuel pump. But.....if it is...im putting the 4th plastic tank in that I have sitting here. If anyone could offer some help I would REALLY appreciate it. Thanks a lot.
