5 qts is the oil capacity for a stock pan.
I usually use 10w-30 because it's hotter here in California, not as thick as 5w-30.
And I usually use AC delco filters, haven't failed me yet, just don't use FRAM.

5 Quarts of Oil and you can use an aftermarket oil filter, I use a K&N filter...as for what kind of oil, i use Mobile 1 pure synthetic...but be prepared to pay between 40 and 50 bucks if you want to go with the good stuff...I belive the engine calls for 5W-30 but the Mobile 1 that i used was 10W-30...

Yep, everyone here is right on. These cars take 5 quarts of oil, stick with either 5W-30 or 10W-30, and get a good quality oil filter (good brands generally include AC Delco, Mobil One, K+N, Pure One, just stay away from FRAM).
The oil brand and kind is really up to you. You can buy regular dino oil, a synthetic blend, or a full synthetic. Everyone has their own opinion on what's best.

I put 1 quart in the oil filter before spinning it on, and 4 quarts in the engine, same thing, 5 quarts.

I can get Fram here, through the motor trade, sorry if this has been asked before, but whats wrong with them?
I use Mann filters daily, but have used Fram [and many others] over the years without a problem.
Is it quality, rate of flow or what?

Don't use 10W-40, as the additives used to create such a large difference between cold and operating viscosities tend to make the oil break down much faster than 5W-30 or 10W-30. In fact, I've heard some manufacturers specifically stating not to use 10W-40 in their vehicles because of this.
10W-30 is actually thicker than 5W-30 at cold temperatures. Once it reaches operating tempertures, they both have the same viscosity.
If your engine is in fairly good condition (no known oil leaks or problems), you might try making the transition to synthetic oil. No need to go into all the details since it's been covered too many times on this forum alone, but basically it is superior in every way to conventional engine oil.
The big issue with FRAM is the fact that some of their filters are made with carboard internal peices that are held together by glue inside the filter. This is a known fact. Many people claim to have had the filter break and send chunks of glue and carboard into their engine, but I have yet to see actual proof of this happening, even despite the fact that so many people have reported problems with their filters.
I personally use Mobil 1 SuperSyn 10W-30 in my 305 with an AC Delco PF35L oil filter. For $30 total, I figure that's about the best oil change you can give your car.

I like Mobil 1, used it for years, and it keeps an engine spot on, no sludge or deposits, just most customers wont pay the price for your average car. Its about £25 [$43.46] for 4litres, [or under a gallon if you prefer], and as most average cars are over that, you need another bottle, plus the filter and parts etc.
Thats interesting about Fram, never seen or read\heard about any problems, but lets face it, you dont want that to happen even once.
