Well, bought some snow chains for the Honda and Camaro. Havent driven the camaro yet, but the honda did great around town, then the wife went on the high way and the chains broke and mutilated my honda!

Beware!!! Make sure the chains are rated at the correct MPH, dont take the word of the idi0t clerk!!!!!!!!!

running chian son the highways because we just got 7" of snow and I havent had a chance to get better tires. Running chains on camaro because it's a non highway car and there is no way in hell i'd get tracking.

Wont get snow for another 2 weeks, gonnaget better tires tommarow and get my money back for the chains. As for the honda, maybe a body kit

The next question would be why did you feel the need to go out when there were 7" of snow on the road?

Chains are for when there are large amounts of uncleared snow or ice on the road and you have absolutely no choice about driving, usually due to matters of life and death. They're good to a speed of maybe 10 mph, not much more. If they were sold to you as an alternative to snow tires, I hope you can get your money back.

Say what you want to about Alabama being the "armpit of the US" but it does have it's good points. If it snows 1/2" down here they barricade the roads and threaten to shoot anybody that drives.
Think I'll go cut off another catalytic converter...
Oh, that reminds me, I really need to get an exhaust on my GTA.
Driving it for six months with only turndowns after the headers is probably enough.... naa, I got Christmas shoppin' to do. Maybe I can ask Santa for a tag & some insurance.

I almost bought some chains tonight because I live about an hour or so from where 88_Import_Slaye is at and it is really bad out there. We got about 12" in Kansas City, Kansas. I actually stayed the night at my girlfriend's last night when it snowed and came home tonight when the roads were more clear. But still, I barely made it home. I need new tires, I forgot to put the sandbags in the back of the car, it's a stick, and it has an open diff. So yeah, it SUCKS in the snow! Needless to say, I put the sandbag in the back right when I got home.

I went to Advance Auto Parts to see if they had any tire chains and the guy at the checkout counter strongly advised against them (they didn't carry them either--which is kind of weird because Kansas and Missouri police can both give tickets for anyone who gets in a wreck or gets stuck in the snow without tire chains). The guy at Advance said the chains can get loose and get twisted around the rear axle while you're driving, taking out your rear axle, rims, tire, fenderwells, etc. in the process. He also told me that you can't drive with them on paved roads either. (How can the cops expect people to use chains if some roads are plowed and others aren't?!? Oh, well. I had a cop actually help me get my car unstuck tonight--and no ticket. ) The auto parts guy said the best thing to do would be to put 4 sandbags in the car--2 in the hatch and 2 in the rear seats to keep the weight balanced. If they're 70 or 80 pounds apiece, that should help.

The idea is that chains are to be on the car as little as possible. You put them on only when you need them, and you take them off as soon as you reach bare road. The longer you have them on, the more likely they are to break and damage the car. Tire chains are an absolute last resort. If you need chains, you shouldn't be on the road at all.

seems like chewing up the road is ok, just get studs then, they are for a higher speed and leave nice marks in the road

hehe...

The tires on my camaro are studded ones from last winter, i only drove it once and decided to just park it before some idiot runs into it.

Anyways i wanted to get my moneys worth out of them so i pulled the studs out that were on the outer side of the tire and left the rest in. Now everyone knows which black strips are mine because theirs a 1/4" deep thin strip of pavement missing in all my burnouts lol

It also explains the huge tires that you see in my pictures!

Snow chains

get CABLE chains! (sometimes called 'Z' cables) They are rated for highway speeds, easy to get on and off, and they really do work! I have an 'emergency' set in my IROC, and got caught by a suprise blizzard in Wyoming and had to use 'em. They don't make too much noise, they really do work at highway speed, and they help you to stop and steer as much as to start. For those of you back east, the way the weather is out west, you can have sun one minute, and it can be snowing like heck the next. (or raining, or hailing, or blowing...) I generally drive my Blazer when there is any hint of bad weather, but you just never know. And sometimes people have to get out in bad weather, or get caught by suprise. Cable chains don't even weigh that much, so i carry 'em all year round. They don't chew up pavement, don't bang around like chains, and can even be put on a car that is already stuck.

7" of snow is a minor inconvenience, not an excuse to stay home, just ask my boss. Of course a '04 Silverado with a Z-71 package makes it a little easier.

cable chains

Geeze, give the poor guy a break, huh? If you gotta drive, you gotta drive! (i remember what it was like to only have ONE car, at least I had the good taste to still DRIVE 2nd and 3rd gens!) Anyhow, at least in Colorado, you can get cable chains in ANY parts store. Dunno about where you live, so:

JC Whitney has 'em

There is an online store called www.tirechains.com - good prices too!
http://www.tirechain.com/P225-50R-16.htm

www.partsamerica.com - that's the checker/shucks/kragen auto stores - look under cable chains.

These things are GREAT to just throw in the back of the car/truck, you never know when you are gonna need a little extra traction!

cable chains

Oh, and just make sure you get the DIAGONAL (Z pattern) cable sets - these you can get on WITHOUT moving the vehicle. If you get the straight kind, you gotta roll the car onto them just like regular chains. If you get the diagonal ones (they make a z pattern back and forth across the tire, hence the name) you can put them on if you are stuck.

OK...so why again try and use snow chains instead of decent snow tires?

I am just curious as here in MN studded tires and snow chains are outlawed. So I got a decent deal on a set of Eagle Ultra Grip HP snow tires instead...

Dangit Vader- yer makin me homesick! I had a bunch of old bubblenose black stripe Ski doos back in the day when I grew up in MN. But I moved south and married a southern gal who thinks the north is a cold, uninhabitible place where people talk funny.

Anyway I will ride again one day!!!
