bad fuel pump again?

ok around November my car was having troubles. i was at sheetz getting something 2 eat and when i started my car up it seemed 2 have a rough idle and then i backed up and it sputterd kind like it was going to stall, and did the same thing in drive and when i pushed on the gas peddle it seemed like it wanted 2 stall, then a little bit down the road it did stall.... so i tried starting it back up and noticed that i could not hear the fuel pump primming then i waited a bit and figured id try again. the fuel pump kicked back on and it fired right up it did this only one time before when i was at work came out and the fuel pump wasnt working then after awhile it kicked on and everything was fine....... then some time later in November i went 2 start my car and nothing i tried and tried and tried then i figured forget it it was close enough 2 winter and decided 2 just let it alone.... then yesterday just out of curiosity decided 2 try and start it. I turned the key and the fuel pump primmed but i had a dead battery so i charged the battery and it fired right up. then i figured sweet my car is running again so i shut it off and later that day i tried and it had the same symptoms as bfore...fuel pump wasnt primming. check the fuse by the fender and all the fuses in the fuse box.. the only thing i didnt try was hardwiring the fuel pump and the fuel filter
i heard from somebody that you can connect a 12v power wire 2 the ALDL and it will send power 2 the fuel pump but what i s the ALDL?? i wanna give that a try then its off 2 the fuel filter..... anything else i could try to find out what the problem is???

ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED

ok, i definately know a LOT about this area...... in the past 8 months, i've completley redone the fuel system on my 87 IROC and my brothers 87 GTA

first, check your fuel pump ground - it is located underneath the drivers side back seat, take the bottom part of the seat out, and it should be screwed to the sheetmetal bracket.. even if it looks good, take it off, clean the screw, the hole, etc, and make sure its tight... a bad ground is somewhat common

next, check the Fuel pump fuse, it is Not located in the fuse panel, but rather located on the passanger side (not sure about ur car) of the fender near the radiator, in a wire that should be coming directly off of the battery, it's in a little case, and it should be a 20 A fuse, thats for the fuel pump only...

check the filter, is it clogged? its located right under the car, follwo the fuel lines fromt he tank, .. its mounted to a bracket under the drivers side rear seat

one way to test if your pump is working, is to check the fuel pressure at the fuel rail near the TPI unit, there is a small cover to a pressure checker device, if you stick a screwdriver in there, gas should shoot out like a fountain, if it leaks out slowly, then you probably have a clegged filter

the fuel pump relay could also be cooked, its located (usually) on the firewall drivers side, mounted to this bracket holing 3 relats (burn off, MAF relay, and Fuel pump relay) sometimes the realay can go bad, .. it should make a faint clicking noise when thying to activate the pump (at least both of mine do)

also, there is a fuel pump switch (kinda a switch) its a bell shaped device located under the distributer (at least on bopth of the 87's ive worked on) .. it threads into a elbow that goes into the intake manifold in the back, it should have one wire connected to it, sometimes this unit goes bad, i replaced it for about $34, kinda easy work, jsut dont mess up the distributer, or wires, etc

also, there is an oil pressure sensor, usually located above the oil filter, screwed into the block, it has a black plastic connection with wires going to it.. the oil pressure sensor is like an "idiot switch" if this switch senses that the oil pressure is not enough (when the car is already running) it will cut off power to the fuel pump, to prevent the engine from running with low oil ..and killing itself.. so the oil pressure sensor, it costs about $16 ... you will need to borrow or get a special socket to get the sensor that is threaded into the block out... its not that hard if u have the space

-usually, if i was smarter, i would have checked these things first, however, both times i went straight to the tank, removed it (which also means removing the swaybar, muffler, main exhaust pipe, panhard bar, heat chields, gas tank srtaps, etc,

the pump in an electric in tank pump, 3 wires, power, ground, and signal wire. the pump comes out, after snaking itout of the hole, here you can check the screen if its dirty, check the tank condition ? (rust? slime? sludge? etc) .. if the pump needs to be replaced, you can get it at a junkyard, or maybe www.hawksthirdgenparts.com or other sites..

teh way to test if the pump is good, is to take it out, put it in a bucket of gas , and run two wires from it to the pos and neg battery terminals on ur car, if the pump kicks on, your good, pumps fine.. that means the problem is someplace betweent eh battery and the pump.. probably witht eh wires or one of the other devices/sensors i mentioned earlier

sometimes you can use a voltmeter ( should buy one) to test the voltage at the harness at the back of the car.. first test the battery.. should read at 12.xx volts, then test the relay (firewall area) should be 12.xx volts (with igniton on, not car on), then test it at the fuel pump harness, which is located under the car, above the rear axel, coming thru the sheetmetal.. test that, if its low voltage, the problem is usually a bad ground connection....

let me know what you find,, i'll see if i can help you more ...

To more easily remove the fuel pump, you can cut a hole through the sheet metal above the fuel pump and access it from there. Then screw in a lid. Somebody on this site said shops do this.

not to flame anyone... but it seems like a bad idea to get a used fuel pump. if you wanna go cheap get an OE quality replacement from napa, schucks/checker/krager, knechts, pepe boys or whatever local auto parts dealer you use ( i like napa). or you can go with a GM OEM replacement. however i have been told that for the same price you might as well go with an aftermarket upgrade like a walbro.

IROCZman15- i found all the rest of your post verry helpfull. except i would never get a junkyard fuel pump.

good luck.
