MAny rear axles have a stamped steel tag bolted to the rear cover, and/or numbers stamped on the front of the right axle housing tube.

The only problem with using the tag or RPO codes is that only tells you what was in the car when it rolled off the assembly line 20 years ago, not what it may have in it today!

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
Sounds like the casting number for the main center section housing piece; and a date code.

Pretty much useless.

If you want to know what a rear end is, besides what you can tell from the outside (brackets, length, etc.), the ONLY ACCURATE WAY to know, is to take off the cover and look inside.
