Starting problem

My car has been off the road for about 12 months, when i first started it up about 2-3 weeks ago it started and run fine but i did not have a timing light to do timing so left it a while to do a few other jobs,When i came back to start car it started ok but was missing on tickover but ran ok on higher revs,i changed the pickup coil in distributor and it seemed to help but on friday i took car out and drove about one mile to gas car up but then car would not start,it turned over but would not fire so left it about 10 minutes and it started first time but after stopping again it would not fire unless left a while, could it be distributor problem, starting problem seemed to start from me pulling wire of coil whilst car was running and i was trying to find problem with missfire.I still do not have timing light but have tried turning distributor to get it running better but it does not improve anything.Normally when distributor is turned the engine revs go up or down as the timing alters but mine just stays same no matter where distributor is turned.Any help would be appreciated.
Engine has not been apart only intake taken off to paint engine and engine is standard. It has a accel coil which was bought new and a k&n type intake.

Re: Starting problem

My car was doing the same thing..would start fine one minute and not start the next, I pulled the #1 plug out to check for spark and there was no spark...turns out the problem was in the capacitor in the distributer..a $15 part at autozone..now it starts up with just the bump of the key everytime http://www.autozone.com/N,16200724//...eResultSet.htm

Re: Starting problem

My car does not have a capacitor.I have a spark even when engine turns but does not start, will be checking injectors to see if they are working when car is in non starting condition as i am wondering if it is a vats problem as mine has been bypassed.

Re: Starting problem

i had that problem but it wasnt spark, it was the fuel pump. When then pump and engine were warm and you tried to start it, the darn thing would start for 2seconds then just capoot! Got it towed and it started right up. We got the car back and yet again, when it warmed up it wouldnt start. So we told the shop and they thought we were crazy but it turned out to be the fuel pump, may that be your problem?
