It's not easy.

You have to unbolt the motor and angle it up by several degrees to get it out.

Why do you think you need to replace the oil pump?

Re: is changing the oil pump in a 89 iroc hard?

It's super easy; just one bolt.

Getting to that one bolt is the hard part.

Given that oil pumps VIRTUALLY NEVER "go bad", he's most likely proposing a giant waste of time. Unless he's repairing someone else's mistake or something, like taking a high-volume pump out of a street motor, and putting a regualr one back in.

But if he's got low oil pressure and/or knocking noises and he thinks he's going to fix it by changing out the pump, he's wasting his time.

Re: is changing the oil pump in a 89 iroc hard?

Its pretty obvious to me there is a oil clearance problem, most likely a bearing or 2 are on their way out

Re: is changing the oil pump in a 89 iroc hard?

I changed out the oil pump in my car about 6 months ago (LO3 with 150K miles). There was no oil pressure and the motor was clattering. I thought it was bearings at first, but I figured I'd try an oil pump just in case. When I got it out the spring in the pump was completely worn out (compressed and wouldn't spring back out. Swapped in the new one and no more knocking and the oil pressure stays between 40-50.

It's not that hard to change the oil pump, just very time consuming.

Things I had to unbolt before I raised the engine with the hoist:

motor mounts
exhaust manifolds from y-pipe
tranny mount

Then I put a jack under the tranny for support and raised the motor with the hoist until the bellhousing touched the firewall.
To get clearance for the oil pan to come out I had to remove the dust cover from the front of the tranny and the starter.

You have to fish the oil pan out, but it will come out. When you pull the pump out make sure you notice and remember which direction the slot on the top of the shaft is running (it makes it alot easier to put back in).

Re: is changing the oil pump in a 89 iroc hard?

Oil pumps do not usually fail. Low pressure is probably because the bearings are shot. Even if it is the pump, if you go to that much effort to change it out, if the motor has a ton of miles on it anyway I'd pull the whole thing. There is a good chance you go to all the trouble to change the oil pump, and then start the car up and the pressure is still low because the pump wasn't the problem.

How the hell did you get the oil pan out Lol I've been trying for weeks I've unbolted the exhaust and took off the starter and unbolted the motor mounts and I still can't get the oil pan out. Help if u can. (89 Iroc z 5.7)
