Well i'm depressed...

I'll give you guys the background first...

My uncle bought a jasper reman 350 engine for his 84 el camino.
(90 and up/Gen 1 reman/stock replacement truck engine)

Blah Blah Blah i knew the block was made in mexico, it is a 4 bolt main and i just pulled the valve covers today and found out they were "hencho in Mexico",also. the casting are 83417359 and have 76cc's.

Alright now you guys know why I'm depressed, so please give me some ideas and suggestions to fix this emotion (besides buying a bullet and renting a gun!)

Also a little more info on my situation....

i sent TGO member Sonix a PM about his engine (very similar combo) I have an Edelbrock performer RPM, a VS 600cfm holley carb, xe268h comp cam, and he suggested 416 heads. Sonix, I am 99% leaning towards them. Just can't find any for sale Also, I did some forum jumping and it looks like my Jasper pistons are -12cc dish. So here's to hoping for 10.1 comp

I just need everyone else to post a reply to either toss these heads or keep and pocket port them or ?????????

also side note...
are the 416's centerbolt valve covers, and have the acess. holes?

Re: Well i'm depressed...

The area I live in, Newport Beach, Ca. has 60,000+ boats of all shapes and sizes. I`m sure one of them needs an anchor. Kidding aside, if Sonix has the same type motor, he knows what he is talking about in his posts so I would have no problems taking any advice he has. Also, with all of the out-sourcing these days, an engine made in Mexico is probably better than one made in China. If there are any good machine shops in your area, perhaps you can get the heads milled and if you have the time, tools and desire you could port them yourself. I know nothing about the 416s.

Re: Well i'm depressed...

Don`t know if those heads will work for you or not, my knowledge of heads stops in the early `70`s. There used to be machine shops around here that specialized in heads of all sorts. You could walk in , tell the guys what you wanted and chances are they have a set on the shelf ready to go for a decent price. You might check in your area for the same type of shop. Also, check out Summit part # sum-152123 & sum-151124 for complete new pair of aluminum heads for $649, better ask Sonix about them.

Re: Well i'm depressed...

oh, looks like you started a thread for this.

YOU CAN'T FIND 416's???? Do they have junkyards in Wisconsin or what?!? Look for any rear wheel drive GM with a 305. Cutlass, caprice, camaro....parisienne.... Whatever buick would have in the early '80s in the RWD platform... Lesabre? Cutlass's are common here, their 305 is an LG4, same lame LG4 we go in our carbed Camaros. Same 416 heads.
Or look at 305 trucks and vans for 601 heads, virtually the same head, but with 52cc heads. You can port that open a bit if desired.

FWIW the engine I started with had good ol' heche en mexico heads on it, fantasmal 993 heads. I practiced porting on them, got a good feel for the die grinder, and how thick the metal is in places. 993 heads are exceptionally good for that. They also had 1.94 intake valves on it, which were in decent shape - I stole those to put in my 416 heads. 416's and 601's run 1.84/1.5 valves, so 1.94" intakes are a nice upgrade. The valves are free if you steal them from the 76cc heads you've got, then you just need to pay for a valve job on the 416 heads and cutting for the 1.94" intakes.
081 heads are the centerbolt version of the 416's, those are found on TPI engines from 3rd gens. They'd be considerably more rare than 416's.

I wouldn't expect to pay more than $50 for a set of 416's from a JY. Pick a part would charge something in that range, and other JY's would only see it as "just 305 heads", and would charge little cash.

Wait, how do we have similar combo's? Just the xe268h so far, and the performer RPM intake i'd think. Anyway, don't expect miracles from stock 416 heads, remember it's the porting that makes it worthwhile. By the time you port 76cc heads to flow well you've punched through their paper thin casting, where on the 416's you've actually got the meat to do a good job. Porting is key.
