Re: Noob Question

Rsrookie I know what you mean about the ramps and have found ways around it. One you can jack the car up and slide the ramps under (reason being that they act like jack stands and dont have to worry about the jack failing). Two and this is what i did the first time (and wont be doing again lol) is make a ramp leading up to your ramp. I took some plywood that usually goes under the ramps to keep 'em from sliding on concrete (we have bolts to do that now) and made them as a ramp then put blocks underneath of them to keep them from breaking from just my wieght. Well i made it up onto the metal ramps no prob but the creaking n cracking sound was enough for me to say okay next time just jack it up. Neway thats my advice on that if you need to get under the car.

vette I'm actually really impressed with those stats i wasnt expecting that at all.... I still can't get past the pt cruiser look though, idk to each their own right lol. Ohh and far as the crash goes i was on a back road two days ago with a friend (he was driving since im sure the ? will b asked) in a ford explorer and we were going around this sharp turn when we side swiped a dump truck (feed truck to be exact but they look the same... single axle). Ended up totaling the ford b/c the hyrdolic pump was sticking out the side and it kinda pulled the ford in a bit closer..... Anyway besides the fords structure the front left tire also was ripped off and the dump trucks rear axle was as well (i believe that both vehicles were traveling close to 50 mph). Everyone was able to get out and walk and only had bruises and slight cuts. Anyway long story but i tell you so that i can say with confidence that newer cars are made to let you walk away from bad accidents (well wat looks bad atleast) anyway just sayign that i think you would of been okay in most newer cars.... but hey if you like the car thats great.

And Kevin......
Yeah im a senior in high school this yr and last yr was the last time the offered any kind of hands on class (like u mentioned) and even still it was nothing special. So I know what u mean. And yeah maybe it should be but it wont b. Everyone is obviously enjoying tlking to each other on here so relax and let it go for awhile.

Ohh and mason some people are just more skilled at somethings then others.... Theres plenty of people out there that can do really complicated things but get lost with the simple stuff.

Ight well sry this was so long but i was tired and just tend to type... By the way no personall attacks were meant to b made and i hope all above know that.

Re: Noob Question

OK now to date myself.
I graduate high school in '95 and I knew more about cars then the guys who took the shop calsses. even then they were a joke.

Lets stop with the attacks we all were beginners at some point. Who knows what the previous owner may have done. Matbe there is no dipstick or its been moved by a motor swap. None of us could tell that with out pics.

z2eight for grins and gigles check the driverside of the engine just look to the right of that valve cover in that area and see if you find it. if you do thats not the original motor.

We all live and learn. I had a car roll of those ramps on top of me and a buddy. He was putting a hurst shifter on his 72 cutlass and popped the car into nuetral while we were under it I rolled out in time leaveing a chunk of my upper arm on the car but he was trapped under.Thank god the floor panel was nothing more than rust stuck to the carpet and he was unhurt.

buell. I hate the look of the pt cruiser and it has no interior space. The same guy designed both cars but the hhr is much better looking and more capable.
the only thing i would change if I could would have been to get the SS but I couldn't afford it Oh and here's a pic of the old car What you don't see of the $14,000 and counting when totaled is tha tthe engine and tranny are not attached to anything anymore.

Re: Noob Question

Any luck on finding that oil dipstick or changing your oil yet.

If I remember right, if that engine happens not to be the original, and is older than 86 then the dipstick for the oil will be on the opposite side of the engine.

It is also entirely possible that it is gone all together. I have seen a few cars where the dipstick was broken off and sometimes it is really hard to see the hole it would normally go into, especially if you do not know exactly where to look for it.

Here is the easiest way yet to find that dip stick and to find where to put the oil.
I have no clue where you live, but if there is a Murray’s, Parts America, Autozone, or other Auto Parts store, just go in and try to find a worker that looks like they know what they are doing.
Then just tell them that you are unfamiliar with this style of car and could he possibly show you where the dipstick is on the car.
Try to go during a time they are not super busy and they should have no problems with showing you where it is.

As for being a Noob, I truly hate it when people try to boost their Egos by putting down people for lack of knowledge, or for not being as “Elite” as they Think they are.
Everyone has to start somewhere, and it takes courage to admit when you don’t know something.
I wish some more people I knew would just say they don’t know something instead of pretending they did.

Glad to see you own a Third Gen and that you are trying to take care of it.
Good luck on the oil change.

If you have any questions feel free to ask them.

Older than 1980, actually.

Re: Noob Question

Ok dude I didn't see it in any but you just missed the area right were it should be.
see the big black thing in these pics it should be right behind that.

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...DIGIPIX023.jpg
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...DIGIPIX027.jpg

Now I see headers. do you know anything about how the headers got on the car or what brand they are. the reason i ask is that the dipstick tube has to be modded and slight moved to install some headers and the person who put the headers on could have removed the dipstick tube from the car.
see if you can get a pic looking down just behind that black thing in the above pics.

Re: Noob Question

just drain it and put 5 qts in and be done with it. i know it was hard to find the hole to put the dipstick tube back in when i installed my headers maybe the guy got lazy. do you guys think it will sling oil out if the tube is pulled out of the block?

Re: Noob Question

how does the guage pointing at 30 make him think his oil level is low again? that oil pressure guage has nothing to do with oil levels until the engine sucks the pan dry with only 1 quart of oil in the motor essentially. Time to take it to someone who knows what they're doing in case it's missing.

Re: Noob Question

I dont know where to start. The oil dip stick is on the pass side and enters the block right above where the oil pan meets the engine block, and follow it up. Grab your old man and have him give you a hand. I know there is a first for everything, but "your killing me smalls."

Check your engine oil with the car off, add oil in small increments untill you know how to properly judge how much your engine needs via looking at the dip stick tube.

Check your trans fluid when the car is on, and in park (sorry I had to), and do the same thing as above.

Jacking up a car can be really safe. Get yourself a good 2 1/2 ton or bigger jack that you can get under the car with out having to get under the car. Jack up the car on the K member or the front A arms. Too be on the safe side use a bunch of jack stands on the the front sub frame or A arms.

I have been told they are long tubes, and they are very old but you can see an Edelbrock tag on the one.

Re: Noob Question

don't think edelbrock ever made long tube headers for these cars. however I do know that they require relocating the mont point for the upper portion of the dipstick tube. I am thinking whoever put them on may have removed the dipstick tube. any luck on the pics I asked for yet?

Re: Noob Question

yep the tube had to be removed.. If I were you I would just drain it and put in 5 quarts of new oil.. because driving low on oil is hard on your motor so better safe then sorry..

BTW very clean engine bay looks good man

Re: Noob Question

OK, I'll try to explain this more mature like. Open your hood and find a gray, circular handle. Thats your oil. The red one at the back of the engine is the transmission fluid. You add oil via the cap on the driver's side valve cover. As far as buying your oil, follow what the cap says, probably 10W-30 is it. Don't listen to anyone else on proper oil viscosity, always follow what your car says. Don't feel stupid man, everyone learns differently.

if you were to read this thread you would have seen, that he does not have a dipstick tube as far as any of us can see from the pictures.. and 5W-30 would be fine as thats what most summer cars use..

Once you finally find your dipstick do your car a favor and change the oil at least once a month..you do this an your 305 will last longer then you would think

there is no since in that unless you are using crappy oil or are really hard on your motor. stick with 300k miles or 3 months whatever comes first....really if you use a good oil and filter and dont beat the hell out of ur car u could go 4-5k miles on an oil change with a conventional oil and even more with a good synthetic...my 99 v6 camaro gets fresh Mobil One every 6k miles. The oil change and autoparts companies want you to change it so frequently cause well thats how they make money. In reality you dont need it that soon if everything is in good working order. But like i said for you id just stick with the normal 3k miles or 3 months whatevers first.
