Noob Question

This is a silly question, but I'ver never changed the oil on my car. I'm low on oil from what the guage says, and the car is heating up very quickly so that has to be the problem. I don't have the tools to go under the car so could I just pour some oil done the tube till I get all my oils changed a month or 2 from now (long story )

If so, what oil should I get? I don't need anything real good just something basic to tie me over, the car has 92,000 miles and the oil guage read 30 out of 60.

Re: Noob Question

The gauge your talking about is the oil pressure. You need to go under the hood and check the oil dipstick and see where your oil is at.

Re: Noob Question

I told you I was a noob,

Well I checked my oil when it was running..like the stick itself said and I'm in the middle between cold and hot, and it should be in the hot area since the car was hot. I have 2 qts of this stuff that I'm gonna put it to tie me over, I'm not actually changing the oil just putting some in to tie me over for a month or 2. (very light driving) maybe 12mi a day only 5 days a week.

How much should I put it?

Re: Noob Question

btw if you get on your aim itll b alot quicker to type back n forth
umm do u want to change it or do u want to add fluid?
change:
go underneath the car and take off the drain plug. This is located at the back of the oil pan. After oil has drained most of the way out then take off the filter and put new one on after putting oil around the seal then tighten by hand so that u can get the filter back off. Next put the drain plug back in and then look at the engine form the top. On the right valve cover there is a black cap towards the back of the engine twist this off and put your oil in there (careful how much, can explain this in more detail if you want) after waiting a few mins check ur oil level.
add fluid:
take off previously mentioned cap and add in oil. Btw i'm currently using penzoil high-mileage oil that i got on sale at jiffy lube and i havent noticed any problems from it yet. Though a month after i changed my oil i had to add another complete quart, thought i havent seen any leaks (father said for the first few changes it will burn some oil.....) Ohh i was told to def not switch to the synthetic b/c anything over 50k (i think) miles any it will ruin your seals, Pretty much synthetic in high miles vechile= no.

Lastly sorry if this post made it seem like you are an idiot i just didnt know wat you meant by pouring oil into the tube.....

Re: Noob Question

Hold up a minute here.
Do you want oil or trans fluid
The reason I ask is you check oil cold not hot
you check tranny fluid hot.
Also the oil dip stick does not say hot/ cold on it the trans dip stick does.
you do not add oil thru the dip stick tube you add it thru the hole in the valve cover were the oil cap (probalby on the drivers side valve cover) is it will be marked and should say what oil viscosity to use.

With more then 93000 on my car I only use mobil 1 full synthetic. other then a leaky valve cover(my fault it leaks and don't want to replace bc motor swap this winter) I have no leaks

So your saying that dipstick way in the back is the oil? But to fill it there is something up front? Ahhhh let me look around some more thanks for the help so far.

I didnt even think of that..... yeah the oil dipstick says something about add one quart towards the bottom of it. Its the dipstick farthest away from the back of the engine bay.

Re: Noob Question

Oil Dipstick is Black handle shaped like a T Pass side middle of valve cover
Trans dip stick Red or Grey handle shped like ring you can put a finger thru Pass side back of engine by fire wall.
Oil cap( were to add oil) Driverside valve cover toward rear
I'll look for a pic to show

power steering is a black case on the front of the engine by the serpentine belt. and the stick is hard and attached to the lid plus only 3ins long. i doubt that is what he was looking at..... well atleast on my car thats how it is

Re: Noob Question

Thanks for the pic, I'm gonna have to look for the oil dipstick again tomorrow. I looked for a good 30min in that area and couldn't find it!!!!

I don't have a loop like you so maybe it broke off or something, I put one quart of the correct oil in the car, 1 is better than none.
----------
I will change the oil myself, someday but right now I don't have jacks stands and the neccessary tools to do it. My dad forbids me to go under the car also.

Relative got killed that way so I don't blame his protectiveness.

Why don't you start fresh and do an oil change/maybe a whole tune up? So at least you have point to start from. It is not that expensive.

How am I gonna get under the car to drain the oil without jacks lol?

I put one in, it started right up and I let it idle for awhile. Suppose I were to put to much in, why would my engine be done?

Ok even if he is a noob, his first investment should be a decent set of jackstands and a jack, or he should not be working on his car

Yea I looked up a '92 camaro oil dipstick and a few sites selling them had the 'T' looking going on with them, I saw no such thing in my engine bay.

Tomorrow if I don't find it, I'll snap some pics of my engine bay and maybe you can find it lol.

Red = Tranny Fluid
Brown or Black = Oil

Z2eight do yourself a favor and go to any auto parts store and pick up a repair manual. It will show you anything and everything about your car and it has step by step instructions and pics also. It might be a bigger help looking at that then constantly go back an forth on here. They look like this :

Umm are u talking bout the air conditioning unit? and i thought the trans was next to it and the oil was farther forward, either way mines taking out lol.Isnt that a picture of his engine bay? i was just saying if it was clearer we could point out exactly where it was for him

hey vette how do u like that hhr? no offense but i dont like the look of them or cars with that body style in particular....
reason i bring it up is i was just wandering how comfortable they r, how they handle how much storage there is, practicallity, mpg.... u know just curious but the car is all

alright i just went out and looked for you on my car. look at your motor from the front of the car. to the left there is a cylinder shaped piece of metal that is silver. its a little bigger than a pop can. go two inches or less to the right, there should be a tube there with a handle coming out of it, although it is possible you dont have a dip stick. but the tube should still be there, it will be a very small tube like the size of a straw

Re: Noob Question

Okay noob, don't let these other cats bust your do-dads over this. This is what you do.Pop the hood and get a flashlight, whether it's sunny outside or not.Look CAREFULLY and SLOWLY, "feel" if you have to, to find your dipsticks. The oil dipstick is closer to the front of the car and the trans dipstick is closer to the firewall, er, windshield. My oil dipstick has a black T shaped handle with the words "engine oil" on it.The trans dipstick is red and has a ring shaped top.A REMINDER--check trans fluid when the engine is warm and running.Check OIL when the engine has been off for awhile, or first thing in the morning.Don't fart with the trans dipstick at this point; it dosent have Bo Diddley to do with oil pressure.Found it?Good! IF NOT take the car to a decent quick lube place (not jiffy IMO) and watch what they do.I have been changing oil since I was 13 (older bro's 55 Chevy),but I had to break down and take my RS to a Valvoline instant oil change simply because the car sits so damn low and my ramps would ^*** up my front spoiler.Lastly, get the correct Chilton's book for your car.Learn it- live it!!

Re: Noob Question

Go to an oil change place and pay the $36 bucks. Then watch what they do. It'll be a cheap oil changing lesson. This is what's wrong in America today. No vocational classes in our schools like auto shop, wood shop, mechanical drafting...

You'll figure it out. Once you're done you'll be saying two things to yourself.
1. "That was easy."
2. " What do I do with this #$@&" ?????

Re: Noob Question

Buell The HHR rocks. I had the 07 and it got totaled now I have an 08
I use it for work and often hall 4 containers in the back that are 3ft long 1.5 ft wide and 1.5ft tall with the back seats up I get around 28 combined mpg with the equipment in the back weighing almost 300lbs. It works great for me bc I have 2 kids. They love it almost as much as they love my camaro. Of course The deal i have on it you can't touch car, ins, and full maint for 180 a mo(sorry only for me bc I'm special) but I highly recomend them. Oh and by the way 40mph front impact into a car that turned in front of me and I walked away. Any car that you can do that in has my vote.

Nater That is what I was trying to say I think you may have said it better though.
go to a quick lube and watch

On a side note I just realized you said when you checked it was low but we all realize you actually checked the tranny fluid so I think you need 1/2 a quart of tranny fluid too.

Ok, well before school I'm gonna find this SOB. I'll try uploading the pics again because I see no T shaped handle with ENGINE OIL printed on it.
