I made a tool to do it with. It's an old spark plug socket, the side is cut out (only grips 4 flats instead of 6) so it slips over the side of the plug. I also cut the height down. You can't use a ratchet with it though (not like one fits in there anyways), but thats where the hex on the socket comes in. Use a wrench to turn the socket. Works awesome, can do the plugs in less then 20 minutes. I'll try to post some pics.
Another tip is to take the headers off the heads. That way you can lift/lower them so the socket/ratchet/extension fits between the tubes. But this is only a good choice if you're doing the header gaskets too.

Ok here's the pic. Sorry for the quality, cell phone camera.
FWIW: It's 2" long, the Craftsman one measures 2 5/16".

Summit sells a shorty socket to do this, you use it with a wrench instead of a ratchet. I bought a pair of specific sockets from Mac tools. They cost 40 dollars but they are worth every penny. I have Edelbrock headers and have never had to remove them.
I tried to shorten an old socket but could never find a drill to make the hole bigger so the the tip of the plug could go through top of the socket. Just depends on what you want to spend I guess.
