Hi all. I am in the process of building a 383 and am stuck on what cam to get. I have little knowledge on cam specs and have yeilded vague answers from my friends and the internet. I have used the search option on the site and still need help.


Heads: World Products Sportsman II, 200cc,64cc, Intake 2.02 exhaust 1.6
1.5 roller rocker arms

I want something like the XR282HR from comp cams but do not want to do machinig on the heads like it says I have to. I also do not want a cam that is required to be tuned by a computer. I would like to know what you guys think for hydraulic roller and hydraulic flat tappet. I really want it to be good on the 1/4. Also plan on a 100-150 shot of nos. I want to have my engine done, in car, and running by june for the first track day so keep the ideas rolling .

what kind of rpm range do you plan on running

I have heard that roller cams dont offer much of an advantage untill higher rpms, but you get greater ramp rate

but more importantly

is it a roller block and if not do you want to spend the money for retro

just how i would think it through

I am not sure what range I want. I want somthing with a decent launch from a dead stop but wont lose power in higher rpm. (ya I know) Would rather have the first.

I was thinking of going with the roller style cam only for the reason that it is more gentle on the heads and components. But I am willing to sacrifice that for preformance.

As for the block, I am just going to pick up a 350 from the salvage yard or machine shop and have it bored out. And yes I was willing to pay for the roller style regardless. Thanks

I just bought the comp cams XE284H-10 from summit as the lifter and cam combo...from what i researched that is best for my set-up...i would think about the power range you want im shooting 2300-6500 b/c of my intake is rated for that...

After a half hour on hold I finally talked to someone at comp cams and he suggested the xe268h for me being that I still have the stock converter. He said Its the biggest cam I can use.

I called crane cams and that guy suggested the 119671.
The numbers dont seem to matsh up.

Go with the xe268h?????

Best thing to do for how much lift you want is it get the heads on a flow bench. That way you can see what lift is best for your build. If you can, find a good speed shop that is good at what they do to get info about what you want to accomplish with it. They might be able to tell you a good intake and carb system to use as well.
