Car: 1989 Camaro RS
Engine: 2.8l v6
Transmission: 5 Speed Manual
Axle/Gears: Probably the stock 3.42
Manual steering conversion question
I want to switch to a manual steering box, i have only found 20:1 or 24:1 ratios for the third gen camaro, but i found a 12:1 manual box for a 70-81 camaros, will this bolt in, or what will i have to change to make it work?
i really want to get rid of the power steering, i like the manual steering alot better, its just me i guess...

Pre 84 manual boxes will fit however they're not a direct bolt in. The direct fit box has the 4 bolts on the top cover and is found in 84+ S10's.
The early boxes may have a different size input shaft but can be easily connected by using the proper rag joint.
The pitman arm shaft is a smaller size. You can't use a third gen pitman arm on it and the first/second gen pitman arms won't work on a third gen. A special pitman arm needs to be located.
All manual steering boxes will require more turns of the wheel to travel from stop to stop. Without power assist, it needs to use a mechanical advantage through gearing to assist in steering.
A typical power steering box is 2-1/2 turns from stop to stop. A manual steering box from an S10 is 7 turns. Driving down the road isn't noticeable but parking lot driving with wide front tires can be difficult.
If you want an easy swap, find a 4 bolt top cover manual box from an S10. If you want to use one of the older style boxes, expect to have problems hooking it up. If you street drive your car a lot or autocross, you'll like power steering a lot more. Manual steering is more for drag racing to reduce weight off the front of the car and clean up the engine compartment.
If you want to spend $600 on a Flaming River box then that's up to you but there are cheaper alternatives.

if im not mistaken they say its 2 1/2 turns to stop... i am used to manual steering... but ill just go with an iroc z box.... you see im swapping an 89 305 in place of my v6 into an 86 camaro... and i was worried my power steering hoses or anything wouldnt work... plus i was wanting to get a serpentine conversion kit that just runs the water pump power steering and alternator.. but i didnt kknow whether to get pressfit or keyway power steering brackets/pulleys... so i though well ill justgo manual and eliminate it altogether... i dont mind the added forceon the wheel...
