305 questions

I recently swapped a 305 out for my tired v6 in my c1500 truck. The 305 has 80k miles and is from a 1992 camaro rs so it is a roller cam block.

I was looking into some cams and found a reground for $40. It has the same specs as the 270hr.

I am going to port the 1992 305 tbi heads and install threaded rocker studs and machine them for the higher lift cam. Then add some heavier springs and a Holley street dominator manifold with a tbi adapter.

I will bump up the fuel pressure a little. I am running a 6825 pcm with the ability to tune it.

Would this be an ok setup?

If that's what you want, then don't let us criticize.

Re: 305 questions

Well I was asking how this would be power wise. And is .500 lift is too much for this engine? I would kind of like some input or help on this. I am unable to find a lt1 cam for a decent price in my area...

Re: 305 questions

Well first off, porting the heads off of a TBI is not really something that is cost effective. The gains for the money spent aren't really worth it. .500 lift isn't too much but a set of TBI heads wouldn't really give you the gains you're looking for.

Re: 305 questions

Your post read like you had your mind made up and just wanted approval. To be blunt, and risk you hating me, your plan sucks. The engine is an LO3. The heads don't flow, and don't respond to porting. Going to a big cam that the computer won't like, and isn't for your roller lifters, is also a mistake. If you act quickly, you might still be able to get a RamJet350 cam. The lift is comparable to the LT1 cam it builds low-end torque like no other, it saves you from having to buy non-roller lifters, it works with your computer, and it can be had new for $45 if you get it before they run out. In the last few dozen threads in this section, you'll find one titled "Great News! moreso for LO3 guys" this means you. That thread details how to get this cam. I don't benefit from you buying it, but it really is that good.
If you really want that truck to move, you'll trash the LO3 and get a used L31 for a couple hundred dollars.

Re: 305 questions

I asked because I needed some help and as long as I don't get chewed out asking for help its all good. I don't need too much engine. This is for my daily driver short bed truck I don't think i will ever pull anything with it and don't need any more tickets...

I can get a set of tpi heads for $40 as well from a friend. would these be better then the tbi heads? Wow a new zz4 cam for $45, I dont think I can get a better price anywhere.

Should I find another intake manifold?

Re: 305 questions

It's the RamJet350 cam, not the ZZ4 cam. The RJ works best from 1600-4700, but will pull 5500 rpm. The LO3 heads are a good match for that, and will be better than TPI heads up to 2500 rpm. Above 3000 rpm, the TPI heads will be way better. If you do all your driving below 2500 rpm, then no need to spend on heads or intake manifold. If you get the TPI heads, find out whether they're the '85-'86 style, or the '87-up, before looking for an intake manifold.

Re: 305 questions

I think I will hold off on buying the heads then. they came off a 1987 tpi camaro so they are the newer type heads and not the H.O. design.
If I port my TBI heads a little would that help breathe better? I cant seem to find any info on smoothing down the ramp a little in the tbi head, will this help or hurt the head? Sorry for mixing the two cams up BTW

Thanks!

Re: 305 questions

At the last shop I worked at, I had unlimited access to a new SuperFlow 1020 flowbench. I lost count of how many different SBC heads I flowed. Butthere's no point trying to port the swirl-port heads. They will not respond. The only thing that MIGHT help is having them Extrude-Honed.
