Non-computer, set it at 12 degrees BTDC at idle with the vacuum disconnected.
Computer type, set it at 6 degrees BTDC at idle with the flat 4-wire connector going to the distributor disconnected.

A stock 305 HEI distributor is computer controlled (except in Canada). Without a computer controlled carburetor, it will never work correctly. You can set the "total" timing to 34-36 degrees, but it will not start easily and won't get very good gas mileage.

Not neccesarily.. i have an 84 TA with a carbed 355 and an hei distributor. the electronic hookups are for the tach and the battery. other than that it is vacuum advance... not to go against you or anything. just letting you know.
