Weird Issue... would like some ideas

Ok... today I was driving along on the highway and all was good. Car was working fine. Then all of a sudden my engine dies, tach drops to 0 rpms and now I'm coasting to the side of the road.

Just before I finally came to a stop my car backfired.

So I put it Park and tried cranking the engine... the initial try was like I had a dead battery, engine barely turned over, just like say you were trying to start a weak battery in the dead cold of winter. So I shut everything off and leave it for a minute, giving myself some time to try and figure out what the h&ll went wrong. About a minute later I try cranking it again and this time she fired to life ... It was like someone pulled my battery and at the same time the alternator dies thus killing all power to the ignition.

On my way home I noticed that my car sounded different, her exhaust note sounded deeper, almost labored... but I gave her a few good runs on the highway and the power seemed the same... so maybe it is just me being paranoid.

This scenario sort of happened to me before when I lost the ignition control module (located in the distributor) but when that happened there was no starting it, from what I can remember, when a ignition control module dies it dies... in that scenario I never had a battery issue or a backfire issue.

My battery is old (5 years and it gets taken out of the car when it's stored for the winter) and the alternator is stock....

Is it possible for the alternator and the battery to die and "come back to life"?
