Idling high (at times) plus something new...

My car is an '86 305 LG4 and it has always had an issue with idling high at random times (as though something is 'sticking', because if I tap the gas it will 'free' it and the idle will come back down) - this happens in any gear and if I put the clutch in, it will rev really high.

I've never considered this to be too much of a problem...more of a minor nuisance really, however the past couple of times I've had the car out I've also noticed that when I'm in gears 1-4 and I reach around 3k RPMs the engine gets loud and there are vibrations that are stronger than the normal 305 V8 rumbles....it's not to say Im worried my car is going to fall to pieces, but the vibrations are new and I'm unsure as to where to start for diagnosing why this is....any help?

one place to start would be to check the u-joints on the driveshaft
