help with a problem

hi i thought id ask this here cause so far noone has been able to answer

wel i have a 1984 trans am that about 5 years ago we replaced the engine on and soon after started being tempermental (not running quite right). it will start and run but it doesnt have the power it should and just doesnt behave as it should. since i was promised that when i move out i can have the car i figured that before then i want to get it running properly.

now i want to know if anyone here has run into a similar situation and knows the solution

now at the time the engine was replaced it was a while back and i hope my memory is correct but i do know that the origional was a 305 and the replacement was a rebuilt 305 that ws supposed to be compatible

id like to apologize for not having more detailed info but i was about 12 when the work was done so its kinda hard to remember all the details

point being that im gonna be moving out soon and i would really like that car any help wold be greatly appreciated

Re: help with a problem

oh a couple things i forgot to mention the transmission was either rebuilt or replaced at the same time

and one of the things its doing that it didnt before we did the work is when it sits at idle it doesnt just idle
it idles at one rpm for a while then it revs up higher till you tap the gas if you dont tap the gas it slowly revs higher for a while before it levels out and drops back to the original idle

The car is carberted right? Sounds like the carb maybe needs adjusted or even rebuilt. It could just be that the spring attached to your linkage is either too weak or off. When you first start it though it should idle fast until it warms up. I would also check your vaccuum lines too and see if its throwing any codes.

hmm yes it is carberated and i know it should rev high at first but what its doing is like if your at a red light after its been driven for a while if its sitting for a while it will start to rev higher and it gradually increases the longer it sits at idle

Re: help with a problem

oh and yes it does throw a code but usually it does not

tht was actually one of tge main problems with getting it fixed was that we couldnt get it to actualy throw the code and when it did we were never someplace that we could get it checked

Re: help with a problem

What I mean by throwing a code is if you put a scanner on it to see if there are any codes. Even if the CEL comes on and goes off I think any codes will be stored for a while.
