Car pushed backwards while in drive(accident)
Just wondering, would my car have any extra damage other then the exterior if another vehicle pushed mine from the front and moved it backwards while in drive???
Like the torque converter or something...
Sorry Im not the greatest mechanic.

A better question to receive more in-depth answers would be: are you experiencing any new problems while driving?

I wouldnt be too worries about driveline damage i would be more concerend about the frame. I would measure the frame and compare it to the specs in the factory manual.

Re: Car pushed backwards while in drive(accident)
really? as long as you weren't mashing the gas causing the torque converter to grab and the car didn't push you at 25mph backwards the transmission should have enough slippage to let it slide, kind of like letting go of the gas on a hill and watching the car roll back while in drive.

Re: Car pushed backwards while in drive(accident)
I never came across a full explanation of that but I know it's one of the things the NASCAR boys worry about after being involved in an accident. Of course those are manual trans cars, so that could be the difference.
Something to do with causing the engine to run backwards.

Re: Car pushed backwards while in drive(accident)
Unless you have some serious rubber on those tires (like NASCAR, as mentioned previously in this thread) I'd imagine the tires woulda slipped before there was drive line damage.

in nascar if they don't hit the clutch when sliding backwards they run the chance of bending valve train it will bind the engine because the clutches they use are sooo tight.

Re: Car pushed backwards while in drive(accident)
Ive stuck automatics in reverse before when driving (by accident, of course). It usually just causes the engine to stall, which causes the front pump to stop turning, which then causes teh clutches/band to disengage, effectively putting the car in neutral. The other possibility (if you have your foot down to the floor), is that it causes the car to loose control. I suspect most of the damage was to the front end (front crash bar, headligh support, etc).
