removing valve covers...should it be a total bitch?
Cuz I was having the damndest time trying to get mine out, so I quit. LoL! I've found a few pictures of stuff I have questions on that will help me greatly in my quest of removing my valve covers safely. The engine is a 1983 LG4.
Photo 1:
1. I removed this bar going from the intake manifold to the AC compressor bracket, so that freed up some space.
2. I took this bracket off, but I don't remember what it's for. Is it needed now that I've removed all of the factory exhaust manifold/smog junk?
3. This aluminum tube here is the only thing left that is in the way of me taking out the driver's side valve cover. It goes from the back of the intake manifold to the brake booster. Is it just a vacuum tube or something? If I remove it, will something spill out of it?
Photo 2:
1.These wires are all over the pass. side valve cover, making it very difficult to remove it. Is there a way to remove them or move them out of the way?
Photo 3:
1. I'm assuming this is the EGR valve, and it also stands in my way of removing the valve cover. Is it possible for me to just remove it completely and get an EGR valve block-off plate to replace it with? Or is there more to it than just that?
I'm ordering some new valve covers tomorrow and I'd really like to know how to remove these current valve covers with as much ease as possible. I get frustrated very easily. Thanks for all your help with my questions guys!

Re: removing valve covers...should it be a total bitch?
1) You do have to remove that A/C brace to get the cover off.
2) Have no idea what that thin bracket was for - remove it if you like, just don't lose it yet.
3) Just vacuum for the brake booster - remove and replace
Wiring harness - leave intact, just lift the valve cover and slide it out from under the harness, and slide new valve cover under it.
EGR - can be deleted with a block off plate - plenty of articles here on it - it has a vacuum line runs to it that will have to be plugged if you remove or else you'll have a vacuum leak. Its NOT legal to remove it, so check with local emissions laws etc.
It does NOT have to be removed to get the valve cover off - just have to gently wiggle the valve cover out from under the edge of the EGR. BUT - doubt any aftermarket "pretty shiny" covers will fit under it, so it may be a problem with any new covers. But as mentioned, EGR is required emissions equip in most places, so may have to skip the new shiny valve covers.
Get a 10 gallon jug of patience, and take a bath in it. You sound like me sometimes! Have to step back and take a breather when you get frustrated.
