I need help with belts/configuration

I have a 5.7 350 from a '72 Nova and I'm at the stage where I'm putting accessories on. I know the original setup was a V belt. I only want to run an alternator, power steering pump, water pump. I don't care about A/C and if possible, I'd like to avoid the smog pump. What do I need to get in order to make it work? I hear of a 1/2 V 1/2 serp setup that works well but to do that, I don't know what I'd need. A list of things I'd need would be amazing.

What do you have right now for pulleys and brackets?

Re: I need help with belts/configuration

Well I got the entire engine for $50 bucks and there are no brackets or pulleys with it. I was hoping there might be a chance that the alternator and p/s pump from my car would be the right kind for that engine (it seems to be the case when cross referencing parts on summit.com) and all I'd have to change is brackets. I only want to run what's absolutely necessary i.e. no a/c, smog pump.

Re: I need help with belts/configuration

Any alternator mount will work fine - alt on the pass side. I use one from Mr. Gasket, was $30 on the shelf at autozone.

Then on the P/S pump - I went through several off brands, and none worked well. I finally dropped the $105 on the March bracket and it works great - so I recommend not wasting time with anything but the March bracket.

Then just grab a crankcase pulley from a 1987 V8 car - those had the 1/2 1/2 setup.

Mine is run like:

Serp belt from crank to water pump to alternator to crank.

V belt from crank to water pump to p/s pump to crank.

That way, if one belt breaks, the water pump always has a belt on it.

You need a standard rotation V8 water pump, you need the V8 alternator with mounting holes at 12 oclock and 6 oclock (any pre-1988 3rd gen alternator), and any pre-1988 V8 3rd gen p/s pump.

Or you can get a whole stock setup at a junkyard for probably $30.

Re: I need help with belts/configuration

Alright, I'll do some digging around and see what I can get. There aren't many yards around south Jersey that are good. The pick n pulls have next to nothing in them. I'll see what I can find. Thanks!

Re: I need help with belts/configuration

Well the only pull yard I know of around here doesn't have the parts I need. So I posted a parts-wanted thread. Do any of you (by chance) have an spare v-belt/serp setup laying around?

Re: I need help with belts/configuration

I had no luck with the stock brackets - Didn't have A/C and without that extra support from the A/C half of the driver side bracket, the P/S pump stock bracket wouldn't hold P/S pump correctly. That's why I went with the March P/S bracket.

Re: I need help with belts/configuration

I've been bolting in "old school" stuff into 3rd gens alot and was worried about that PS bracket not working when we added headers to my son's 86 Z-28. What would hold the back side of the PS pump? I just bolted it on the front side and left the back off, but you do need a V-8 Air Conditioner bracket. It will bolt to the front of the head and allow you to mount your PS pump. If yours is a V-6 car, the mount may be different, so you may have to have the V-8 pump and bracket, but I wouldn't think that would be too hard to find. As for the 1/2 serpentine 1/2 v belt, those were a little harder for me to come up with but finally found them on Ebay.
