New guy, need help with some general questions.

Hey my name is Will and I just bought my first Camaro (1989 and this is all really new to me. to tell you the truth I had no idea what I was getting into when I bought the car. So I have some general questions that I don't know if I can provide enough info for you guys to answer but we'll see.

- First, I thought I was buying a V6 automatic FI and gave the guy $600 without looking at the car because it was a pure project car. Apparently he didn't know his vehicles very well and instead I bought a 305/350 V8 carb. engine. I was wondering what is the best way to go about finding out whether it is a 305 or a 350?

-The carburetor is a Rochester Quadrajet and thats all I really know, I was wondering how I could find out more information about it? ( This is my first carbureted car :/ )

-From what i can tell the car has a 700R4 Transmission in it but it needs to be either rebuilt or have a new transmission put in. Any ideas on whether I should get it rebuilt or any suggestions for a new one?

I appreciate any answers you guys can give me for any of these questions, I just want to get this project rolling.

Re: New guy, need help with some general questions.

To things are conflicting. 1989s didn't come with carbs so unless it was swapped in, you've got the year wrong.

350s didn't come with carbs either, so again, unless it was swapped...

Run the vin and the block casting number (on the back drivers side of the block) or better yet post them both here.

Do you know if everything is stock?
Can you post some pics?

Re: New guy, need help with some general questions.

The engine was swapped. Originally it was a V6 fuel injection I was told. Title says its a V6 so I know the VIN will say that unless they changed the VIN too when they swapped. (Doubt it) They did a bad job swapping the engine so I doubt they went through the trouble of doing that.

-Sorry read too quick, I'll look on the block. Thanks I had no idea where it was located.

Re: New guy, need help with some general questions.

They wouldn't change the vin, or at least I hope not.

Try to get the casting number. Sometimes it's buried under grease and sometimes wires and other random stuff.

Oh, and welcome aboard thirdgen!

Re: New guy, need help with some general questions.

Do you have pictures you can post up, so we might be able to see what you have?
If its a TBI throttle body it probably a 305. Does the car run?
Check and see if the Tanny fluid has a burnt smell, that wouldn't be a good sign.
You will be able to find all the help you need hear, a lot of guys that know what they are doing. You should get yourself a manual also, learn about your car. Its always nice to have new 3rd gen car owners join the group! Welcome! I have a 89 RS, I have had to do alot of work on it. But its worth every penny!

Re: New guy, need help with some general questions.

I'm not positive on the throttle body. I dropped the pan today and cleaned the filter and and changed the fluid. there were a bunch of shavings on the magnet and the fluid was bad. So that was my bad news for the day but I knew it was probably bad. I flushed the radiator and changed the oil filter and put new oil in. Installed a PCV valve and a new air filter. Grounded some wires that they failed to ground and I'm trying to figure out how to get my high beams to work. It a work in progress but it's totally worth it to me. I'll order a manual soon. If you find a nice rebuilt or used 700R4 let me know, I could use it haha. Any way you could tell me what kind of edelbrock carb. I could/should get to replace the rochester quadrajet carb?

EDIT- Car runs great by the way.

I have a friend that gets pre-paid shipping labels for any weight and any size through his company for $7 a piece. I've used them for super swampers before haha. How much if you would be willing to do that if I shipped them out to you? I live in New York

Re: New guy, need help with some general questions.

If it's a Rochester carb like you say. It won't be throttle body injected. Two different fuel delivery set ups.

It's all cool. When I first started working on my car I actully thought a 350 would look physically bigger externally than a 305. Lol... We all start somewhere

Re: New guy, need help with some general questions.

The vin # is located on the rear driver side top of the engine block, where the engine bolts to the transmission. It can be hard to find with all the grease and dirt back there. Just try to clean it with a rag, screw driver, and engine degreaser, then you should be able to read it with a flashlight. Good luck, hope its a 350, it could be a 400, who knows.

Re: New guy, need help with some general questions.

I found a code on the bottom of the block drivers side that says 627. I'm gonna check the passenger side near where the tranny bolts on.

So when I was looking at the casting number on my block (on the passenger side slope) I was looking at the drivers side? Lol... That's why I double checked... I can take a picture if you want.

The 3 digit number you found on the drivers side refers to the mold I believe (correct me if I'm wrong). The casting number is an 8 digit number and is stamped on the passenger side of the top bolt hole, one of 7, used for connecting the block and the bell housing.

Thanks guys. I'm gonna take a look where the bell housing and block meet. I'll post up a picture of the engine after I'm done looking.

Im 100% positive its a 7 digit number on the driver side top of the engine. There is usually a big casting stamp write above it that says GM.

Re: New guy, need help with some general questions.

I'll have to look tomorrow. I spent the day cleaning the whole car inside and out checking codes and tried finding that code but failed. Oh and tore off the exhaust.
