Looking for advice on which engine to get
Well my next step is to get an engine for this car, I'm just not sure which one I should get. Let me explain:
I would opt for the 1996 vortec 350 but I don't want to buy another intake manifold to fit my quadrajet and an external fuel pump. (like 500 bucks)
I want:
hydraulic roller camshaft
mechanical fuel pump
Center bolt valve covers lol
87 octane gas
After reading wikipedia on small blocks I was thinking a 1987 L98
I was quoted "REBUILT 5.7 CHEVY IS $1900.00 EXCHANGE PLUS TAX" from a local shop. They're pretty well known around here.
I asked for a long block. Does that sound like a fair deal?
For my core return I have a 1969-1979 350 with stupid 305 heads on them. Is that good enough to return as a core?
Thanks for reading. Let me know what you think.

The L98 V8 was optional on 87–92 Chevrolet Camaro & Pontiac Firebird models (rated at 225 hp (168 kW)-245 hp (183 kW) and 330 lb·ft (447 N·m)-345 lb·ft (468 N·m)) 1987 versions had 10 hp (7 kW) and 15 lb·ft (20 N·m) more thanks to 9.5:1 compression and a change to hydraulic roller camshaft. Compression was up again in 1991 to 10:1 but output stayed the same.

Re: Looking for advice on which engine to get
As far as I know, core only applies to the block itself in most situations. You could probably strip down the block and just take them that. You would have to ask the shop to get a more straightforward answer.
$1900--does that include installation? As far as whether or not it is a good deal, you would probably need to put up a little more information about what's included in their rebuild. What are the specifics on the long block? What kind of heads, what cam, what pistons, etc.

You will have to ask the machine shop if they will accept that core. Some will, some won't.
FYI the vortec blocks esp. crate motors don't have a fuel pump boss for a external fuel pump.
What you need is a 1987-1995 chevy 350 with roller cam provision block , and you can run Edelbrock heads 60879 ( http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive_...rformer2.shtml )
or you can find a set of used L98 heads (113's)
If looking in a JY for a block, look for a 3/4 ton and up with a 8600GVW and up for 4 bolt mains - all others will be 2 bolt.
If you ask for a long block, they expect a matching long block including the same casting numbers.

Re: Looking for advice on which engine to get
I just emailed the guy for a 1987 350 and it's $1300 with exchange plus tax. Said it was just a complete rebuilt to factory specs.
I was reading on wikipedia that from 1985-1992 all 350's were L98 so I guess I'm good there.
My plan is to remove the 305 heads on the core and put the 350 ones on that were originally on it.
Anyone see any flaws here? I'm liking this direction.
