Best mid-range crate engine for 84 camaro,

Hey guys, ive been asking alot of questions here and there, it may sound like i have no clue what im talking about, im definatly new to the modifying of cars scene, i was born in 88 and im in love with my 84 camaro Z28 i would just like to give it a little more kick, in another thread of mine i was asking on how to get my 84 down to a high 12 second low 13 second in the 1/4 mile, Would this be acheivable with a nice strong 350?, or will i need a beefy 400+ c.i engine?, i would like to keep it all motor, no nitrous, i'll do whatever it takes i would like to stay carberated, for the time being i have a maximum budget of 5,000, So if anybody could give me a nice build up sheet of the parts and components that will be required for my 3400ish lb camaro to run 13's that would be great, thanks again everyone for the fast reply's just bare with me

Re: Best mid-range crate engine for 84 camaro,

Why does this post sound so familiar to me? Have I seen it here before?

Anyway, you can get to your goal with something like the ZZ4 crate engine, proper gearing and some drag radials on the back end. It's rated at 355 HP but that's GM's stingy SAE rating system. They often lay down more than 300 HP at the rear wheels when equipped with headers, good exhaust and a decent intake, which is sufficient to hit the 12s if you can get anything like a decent launch out of it. Plus the engine it pretty docile on the street. You could daily drive it if you wanted to no problem. The warranty is also nice. The price tag is a bit steep, but you are buying from the Mother Ship so you know the whole thing is well engineered and matched.

You can buy a more powerful engine from the aftermarket for less money, but you usually won't get the warranty, the results may not meet the lofty numbers that are used in the advertisement and it will not usually be all new parts (the block will usually be a used factory casting bord 30-over).
