700r4 to stick

i want to put a stick in my 84 camaro from an 86 iroc. i got everything but the crossmember and the pedal assembly. is there anything else i need to know before i begin my journey? reason is the 700r4 is shot and i got the stick shift for a steal. also is the torque arm still used on the stick shift trans? and how does that hookup? thanks in advance. any help or pointers are appreciated

There should be an attachment point for the arm on the tail piece of the manual transmission. Yes you will still need to use the torque arm.

I believe you can use your crossmember but obviously need the pedals with the switchs. The brake switch can probably be reused but need the clutch switches. Did you get the hydraulics, master/ slave cylinders? The Torque arm mount is a compression type that is bolted to the tailshaft of the transmission and is different from the 700r4 setup. Your old driveshaft might still work. If you did not get the center console shift plate and inner and outer boots then you will need to look for one or mod your auto shift plate and get shift boots.
After that you swap the trans you will need to wire the clutch start safety swtch and reverse lights.

I did the swap on my car your drive shaft will work and you tq arm mount will work i never wierd up a clutch safety switch tho it dont realy matter ( i know to push the clutch when starting it)

do i need the complete pedal set or can i just install a floor mount pedal/hanging type pedal? and what switches are on the pedal?

I did this swap 1-1/2 yrs ago and I'd do it over again in a heart beat. I recommend that you stick with the pedal assembly designed for this car. It attaches primarily to the 4 bolts of the brake power boster (plus some additional supports) through the firewall. If you try to use some other type of pedal assembly that mounts somewhere else to the firewall, I would almost guarantee that it will flex under pedal pressure as very thin sheet metal is used everywhere in this car.

As far as the starter, I did have to buy a different one specific for a manual transmission. I bought mine at my local NAPA.

where can i find a pedal set at? its a joke trying to find em at a junkyard. also am i able to use a universal pedal regardless of mount issues? and is a floor mount one possible?

has anyone used non camaro pedals? im having a rougbh time paying 150 for a used set of pedals. also can my stock starter work or do i have to get the smaller starter. and lastly, i need to find the speedometer housing that goes in the trans. anyone know wherer to find theses?

As far as I know everyone uses stock pedals. Are you putting in a T5 or a T56 6 sp transmission? If a T5 and you can not find any try an ad in the parts wanted section here. If a T56 look at the 93-97 Camaro and Firebirds also. I haven't checked for certain but you might even be able to make the 5 sp pedals from these years work.

Just search the junkyards for the pedals that fits our cars only. Drive shaft and torque arm will work fine with no problems and both mounts the same as the auto. Use all factory assembly parts. Keep it simple!

No, I couldn't use the original starter, it didn't fit into the bellhousing opening. The T5 flywheel is smaller (153 tooth) and you need to use a starter spec'd for this. I got one off the parts car that provided the tranny, bellhousing & pedals. I then replaced it a year later with a reman unit from NAPA.

You do not need to cut the hole that big. That is probably close to the factory opening though. You only need about 1/2 to 3/4 inch around where the shifter bolts on. His pics are great to give a general location though.

Yes, you are quite right; don't go as forward as I did. I barely had metal left for the sheet metal screws on the front end of the inner shifter boot.

i got the shifter today and mounted it and the gear shifter wont moveinto any gears. the trans is ona bench would that matter why it wont shift? i opened it up and gears look like new and no metal. any ideas?

The attached photo shows some dimensions for the tranny hole. The 3" dimension starts where the metal starts to bend up to a higher elevation.

Regarding the static shifting, have you tried to turn the input shaft by hand a little bit? This might help line up the syncros better to engage the gears.

so thts my issue is that the gears arent lined up? it moves back and forth but wont engage in any gears

It is entirely possible and definitely worth the try. I would have expected it to shift into one gear though. Also I have found that it helps alot if all the gears inside the tranny have a thin film of oil on them to help everything slide easier.
