1982-1992 Camaro General Questions

Hi Guys,

Really informative forums you got around here.

I'm a journalist currently working on a buyer's guide for national publication on 1982-1992 Camaros. I had a few questions that my research hasn't yet answered and figured there'd be no better people to ask then third-gen Camaro owners themselves. So here goes:

Which Camaro, in your opinion, is most collectible and why?

Which is the best performer?

Which is the best daily driver?

When purchasing, what are some common problem areas to look out for?

What are common replacement parts needed?

Where's the best place to get replacement parts?

Thanks guys for the input.

Mods please feel free to move if this isn't the right place for this thread.

Seems like pretty basic questions for somebody to be asking that's writing a book on these cars

True, but I'd much rather do my own research and get direct feedback from Camaro owners, rather than rely on what others have said.

Most collectible: '82 Z28 Pace car. Best performer: '91-'92 Z28 hardtop 1LE w/ LB9 & T5 Best daily driver: '90-'92 5.7L, 3.23:1, had rear shoulder-belts and driver airbag. Problem areas: worst is previous-owner butchery, especially wiring, then engine / emissions controls mods. Common parts needed: Not so much replacement, but sub-frame connectors need to top the list. Re: 1982-1992 Camaro General Questions

Collectible? That's a tossup. The 82 Pace car is collectible but so is the 1992 25 anniversary. What about the Players Challenge car or the SLP Firehawk. Every one of these cars is unique enough to be high on a collectors list.

Best daily driver depends on your driving style. An RS is a soft manageable car while a Z28 or WS6 has stiffer suspension for better handling.

Best performer? As mentioned above, any L98 car however the V6 turbo in the Firebirds has a lot of potential.

Problems when purchasing. Well considering the newest third gen is now 20 years old, the biggest concern is rust. A unibody car can become junk quickly if major rust is in all the wrong spots. Body parts can easily be replaced but structural rust gets expensive to fix.

Common replacement parts? Same as every other type of car of that era.

Best place to get parts? Depends what you're looking for. Most auto wreckers don't normally have a lot of 20+ year old cars in the lots any more and the cars that are in the lots are generally stripped of anything useable. Your local auto parts store or GM has all the regular wear and tear items. Specialty parts and performance parts are available from many specialty vendors.
