Re: Still having a problem getting my new 383 running...

Success! Lined up the dots on the timing gears, put everything back together and started - sounded weak at first, but once I got the timing set...wow. Everything just fell into place. The car starts immediately (without pressing on the gas), idles fine and sounds great. I have a couple of other minor issues to take care of, but I'm finally over the hump. Thanks to all for the advice & direction.

Chevy 86, sorry I didn't respond sooner - I never got notice that there was a post here. I had my chip done by PCMForLess.

Hey man. No apologies necessary. That's good that your up and running man. Well I wish you the best of luck and happiness with your 383. I'll soon be building a 383 too. Oh yeah!

Yes, I asked...basically, he messed up. Somehow managed to install the gears not lined up and then didn't double check. Nothing more than carelessness.

Re: Still having a problem getting my new 383 running...

Sounds something like what I experienced. I pulled the spider today (retains lifter guides), one prong was bend upward. I'm having trouble seeing how this could have happened on it's own. I did the best I could and tweaked it back.. added preload (bending) to other 7 prongs.

Good news in my camp are, I drilled the crap out of guide holes in heads, cleaned up all shavings, installed presoaked new lifters, and got the intake gasketed and bolted. Quit for the night. RTV is abundant, and teflon selant is on the bolts. I also dry fitted my Proform SA roller rockers and determined taller covers would be a good move. And the 'repair' drags on. I got more more tools lying around my buddy's garage than I thought I owned. However, I do now have screw in studs, LS6 springs, new lifters, no leaking injectors, and some sweet but really not wanted valve covers on the way.

Glad you fired up bro! welcome to 383-land. lol Hope you don't 'catch' anything from me.

Re: Still having a problem getting my new 383 running...

I saw a great video on a V8 build. Aligning the dots on the two sprockets isn't TDC#1. It's actually TDC#6. very useful to know, when in need. So you have to have had your entire order pushed 180 degrees. (or whatever that difference would be). Hell man, I got a new scope from HF (The $180 one). I love it. I just shove it in #1 cyl and see the piston rise for myself. With mark on balancer on zero... I'm all set for hooking up firing order wire 1!.. I get rusty sometimes.. I'm by no means a full time mechanic. But, it's nice to know I can still go back and learn very quickly.

These marks being as they are and indicating actually TDC #6 is why on many TV shows you see they can't get engine to fire (distributor is out 180 degrees). if they had started with wire #6 TDC, it would have fired. Hopefully ,we have these OHV V8's for some time to come, because I'm finally understanding them much more.

I can vouch for that. I had switched out my cam a couple years ago. When I went back to mark up the lines by turning the flex plate. So when I went to fire the Camaro, it started backfiring from the intake. I spoke with a friend an he told me I was 180* out. I lifted the dizzy and turned the rotor 180* and fired right up.
