How To Do Porting

I have nothing but time on my hands right now & i figured learning something new would be time well spent, i want to learn how to do my own porting. So for people reading this that know how to do porting, when you 1st started what helped you get the hang of it & is there and specific tools you recommend for the job? My 1st project i plan on is porting a TPI base & plenum. I figured that would be a good way to start out & is also something i need done. So if you wouldn't mind i'm really serious about learning this so can you guys give me some pointers? Thanks.

For small jobs, a Dremel is decent. For severe porting, you'll need a die grinder with 6" shank egg carbide burr. You can go with a air die grinder of a electric grinder. But the most common electric grinder that ive seen is a one speed only. SO you'll need to buy a variable speed switch. There is a dude named Darin who does a ton of porting. He ported my SLP Runners last year. He even has tutoral videos on how to port TPI bases and runners. Here is his facebook and his youtube videos of the porting.....

Re: How To Do Porting

With Vortec heads to port the intake runners you destroy what makes them Vortecs with the rough surfaces that suspends the A/F mixture. The only part you can help out Vortecs is on the exhaust port.
It's tough to turn back the clock on porting that has been done for tons of yrs.Head manufactures with yrs of experience in flow bench testing found to offer the porting service it was very labor intensive and due to flow bench testing found they by hand porting where only able to port match port to port 30%. That meant you might have a lean port and right next to it a rich port. For get what you would have side to side. Yeah that makes true tuning a nightmare. Through research they yrs ago knew given a/f dynamics the shape of the port was huge. Recently(within the last few yrs) they found that the size of the intake runner didn't matter as much as the cross section of the port.
Now I am the first person to admit CNC porting is only as good as the machinist programing it.The better head aftermarket companies who have a budget for R & D and yrs of experience hand porting and have done computer simulations are the current technology. It isn't enough to buy from a company who advertizes CNC porting. It takes all three of the above. With a good program CNC port matches are now 5%. The program simulations,5 position porting, and yrs of experience lead to removing material where it needs it and leave it where it doesn't.
If your starting out with a virgin set of aftermarket heads,it is very foolish to think you could do the same work as the manufacture of the heads in terms of porting. It is very, very, likely you going to screw them up. Oh yeah, you I bet don't even have the basic flow bench. And "Joe's Head Shop" doesn't have the machinery or yrs of experience either.

There isn't current day a good reason to roll the rock away from the cave's front door going in with a die grinder and end up doing more harm than good. It is what you don't know you could have if done right. So if you have spent you hard earned dollars for a potential good set of heads, leave the porting to the pro's.
