high idle after starting trouble
350 TPI, '89
Sometimes theres a long crank time before it starts. Most of the time it starts in less than a second. When it hasnt started in the past at all, it was time to check the ICM in the dist. The last time I did this, I didnt mess with the ICM, just the external 4 pin connector. I made sure the contacts were tight. The car has started perfectly for the last 3 weeks.
This morning, it cranked a long time, like it was the ICM/connector issue again. I tried twice to start it, the second crank time was about 3 seconds, then it started. But instead of coming down to normal idle (about 700RPM), it stayed really high, like about 1500 RPM.
So I turned it off, then restarted it (this time it started after about 1 second), but the idle was still high. I drove to work, and the idle was now about 2K. No codes (at least no CEL).
I recall this happening in the past. After a while, like several hours, the car starts and idles normally. Any ideas/conjectures?

Re: high idle after starting trouble
Geez this sounds like the exact problem I am having right now with my 87 Z28 LB9. Its strange, I start the car for the first time in the day and it starts great. But then I turn it off and let it sit for 3 hours....It takes forever to start... I don't understand. Also everytime the engine starts it goes way up to 1800 and very slowy drops to 1300 until I drop it into to drive then its 800.
This could be related. When I first start the car it has a deep rumble and a bit uneven. Then after a couple minutes its like the car warms up and idles high and the sound is nice and smooth. If you leave, without warming up to the high RPM. You can notice the change. Its like the car becomes lighter and faster all of a sudden.
THings I have changed to try and fix this. I have changed the TPS, PCV(running out of options), IAC, Oygen Sensor, MAF has already been changed, and Fuel Filter. Wires, plugs, Coil and distributer cap all have less than 6k miles on them.
We do have a set of "performance" parts on the car. MSD ignition Box, Coil, Streetfire Distributor and cap. For the longest time I've been leaning towards timing and the Distributor. But nothing has worked for that.
We are going to check the EGR and see if it has anything built up or just nasty. I love these cars I just don't have enough money to keep working on them right now being a student.
