Help troubleshooting Codes 13 and 44

Hi, the check engine light on my 82 Recaro T/A is back on again, and the codes are 13 (O2 sensor circuit) and 44 (lean exhaust indication). I replaced the O2 sensor 200 miles ago in an attempt to correct a code 13, but the light came on again this morning while driving at highway speed. The resulting codes were 13 and 44.

As background, the light comes on at highway speed and stays illuminated until I shut the engine down (regardless of driving conditions). Even if I start the engine within a minute, the light remains off until the car reaches highway speed again.

Thanks for reading, and would greatly appreciate any help in troubleshooting this problem.

Not sure about the code 13, but it's probably related to the 44. I get the 44 occaisionally. It's a soft code, goes away when you shut the car off and doesn't come back on. Basically, the car is running too rich/lean when the code pops on. Mine was really bad after swapping my 305 out for a 350 until I tuned the carb properly.

Have you changed the CAT recently? Rebuilt the carb?

Thanks. I should have clarified - car has the original crossfire motor. No major engine issues or work done recently. Overall, runs well.

Ok, I"m not terribly familiar with the Crossfire injection, but in my experience, those lean/rich codes are a tuning issue.

I'd start with a full tune up. Plugs, plug wires, cap, and rotor. Then I'd look at a rebuild on that cross fire to go with possibly a new cat.

Basically the limited ECM is seen a lean/rich condition that's so far out of whack it's throwing a "soft code". So something is wrong or going wrong, just a matter of tracking it down.

On that 13 code, have you traced the wire from the O2 sensor, are you sure that's good? Could be that the ECM isn't getting a good signal from the 02 sensor.

Thanks for the advice - I replaced the plugs, wires, cap, and rotor during the summer, shortly after I bought the car to restore it. The original cat is still on the car and should probably be replaced as well. I will also check the wire to the O2 sensor to see if that's good.

But did you do the code 13 diagnostics ?

A code means a fault SOMEWHERE in a system ; not just that the main item of that system is faulty.
The sensor could be fine but you could have a wiring / connection / ground fault that is causing your problem

http://www.chevythunder.com/o2_sensor_diagnostics.htm

You will also get a code 44 from a wiring problem
