Re: My $3,500 353sbc 1000hp build ( Cheap Thrills )
while not the rods i wanted they will do just fine , as they are prolly the strongest part in the rotating assembly anyways lmao
it should be assembled this weekend , i just cant get away from work during the week since ive been working 12-14 hour days for the last 3 weeks ( not going to argue though its funding the car build)
when i assemble an engine i like to do it when i have enough time as not to rush and to be able to complete it in one day if possible
i still needs some parts for the hsr so far thats the only thing holding me back from having the engine complete and ready to fire once assembled
only other thing to update is my th400 is done and i need to pick it up ,still need to decide who im going to goto for a converter
what i think im going to do before i spend a ton of money on a converter is install my mild built 700 and a stock low stall converter and see were the new combo spools and what the low rpm boost threshold is and then order a converter for the 400
hopefully i can get all this done before the end of the month as the plan is to trailer the car down to las vegas speedway or upto rocky mountian raceway in salt lake city to do some tuning the end of the month. i really want to goto vegas as i have never been to vegas and ive lived 300 miles away for 4 almost 5 years now , not to mention lvms is about 3000 ft or more less in elevation then rocky mountain raceway

im taking the day off work tommorw to start assembling the longblock after that alls thats left is for me to pick up a fuel rail kit and decide on what regulator i want to use and order that up

Re: My $3,500 353sbc 1000hp build ( Cheap Thrills )
so the weekend didnt go well , had a emergency to deal with friday that cut into my work time.
so first up i goto assemble the heads one the second valve spring the valve spring compressor broke and shot one of the retainers clear across the shop , and it only took us a few hours to finally find the retainer.
so with a broken sporing compressor i decided to make my own ******* style , and it worked out well
1 * inch c clamp + some washer thing i had laying aaround +_ 2 bolts and one scarp piece of flat stock
its ugly and it works lol
the goal was to get the longblock assembled by tonight but that didnt happen, luckily i did pick up monday to finish were i left off
i did manage to get the shortblock together
after that i managed to get one cyl head on the engine but i think i have an issue
as i was tq'in down the last stud it felt like it slipped as i was tq'ing it but it did tq up to 65ftlbs , im thinking it started to pull the threads out of the block
i cant decide if i want to pull the head check the block now are just run it and maybe have to helicoil the block in the car if it did start to pull the threads
and thats as far as i got on monday i will finish assembly
and a shot of the new pistons versus the stockers
nice thick ringlands and the rings are spread out further

Before you put the engine in pull the head and fix the hole. You know that.
Many of the piston manufactures that sell power adder specific pistons have a lower top ring to try to avoid the heat generated by the power adder. Also the ring gaps should be bigger to prevent them expanding and the having the ring ends butt against each other. The piston to wall is also abit bigger.
Here is a example of the sheet that comes with I-Con pistons:
Of course every piston manufacture is alittle different.

If you don't pull the head and see what is going on, it'll eat at you…you'll think about it and wonder as you have it swinging from a hoist getting ready to lower it into the engine bay….
Looking good though! Let me ask…what kind of head gaskets are you running? They look kinda like plain composite gaskets in the pic. What's your static compression going to end up at?

Thank you for the honest post about the stud. Most wouldn't want to face it let alone post it on their thread. It's very important for guys to do things like you just did in your post. All these threads I think for all of us is a teaching and learning experience.Me not excluded.Mt two cents is it is what makes a forum great or not.
Again,good job and thank you.

yeah that one head stud is already bugging me , so monday im going to pull the head and inspect it and see if it did infact start to pull the threads in the deck of the block
my ring gaps are .029 top and .024 second , and yes it is a composite head gasket
compression is 9.3-1

Re: My $3,500 353sbc 1000hp build ( Cheap Thrills )
and yes 9.3-1 is a lil higher then i wanted , and i had to use a .040 gasket to get it , but the 10 cc dish piston was the largest off the shelf dish i could find. kind of sucks cause my quench is at .055 but on a forced induction engine it dont matter much
with a .021 gasket cr would jump to 9.7-1
the good side is that at my altitude the higher compression wont matter much , im over a mile and a half above sea level
at this altitude it will act more like 8.7-1 static cr , the big test will be when i tow the car to las vegas to race since they are at a much much lower altitude
the other good news is my new fuel system will be capable of running straight methanol at the track
plan is pump gas and meth injection on the street
and e-85 or methanol at the track ignition system is going to need some serious upgrades for 100% methanol though
my only concern in the fuel system will be if the fuel rails will be cabable of flowing enough methanol i may have to step up to a .750 id fuel rail for that

Re: My $3,500 353sbc 1000hp build ( Cheap Thrills )
the chart u posted is way to small to read
the ring gaps im using is what i normally run and have had good luck with them, havent broken a ring yet, ( there is always a first time though)
i prefer to run them as tight as i can get away with , while others will really open them up

Yep-the power adders gap was at 50.Heat being the enemy.Maybe not as much if your pistons have the lower top ring I spoke of to avoid the heat issues.

thanks guys i did pull the head this morning and the threads were fine , must have been me just worying as i was tqing them down.
got the cam installed both heads on the motor , tried making my own push rod lenght checker but failed so i need to order one , but it looks like im going to need a + .150 or .200 pushrod
also the stock tpi intake WILL NOT WORK WITH THESE HEADS
was hoping it would atleast seal up so i could break the engine in while i collect the final few parts i need
ill post some pics in a few mins

Re: My $3,500 353sbc 1000hp build ( Cheap Thrills )
u could but man that would leave a whole lot of power on the table , bhays also has a chromed or polished tpi base so i dont think thats an option for him
the ports in the tpi base are tiny compared to the heads as well wonder how much turbulence the mismatch could cause
but if it wouldnt be an issue / epoxy welding up the factopry base wouldnt be half bad as it wont take much to get the gasket to seal

just ordered a pair of gt3582's, new turbo flanges , bunch of 3 inch mandrel bends for the dual 3 inch downpipes , and im debating on ordering a 2 in and single out inter cooler so i can redo all the charge piping
i still need to come up with a manual steering box and manual brake conversion so i have room to run the downpipes out the fenders behind the front tires
sigh... the more i work on this thing the more it becomes a track only car, before i know it ill be hanging some fiberglass doors and front end on it

pushrods are sitting at the post office ill pick them on lunch break today,
need to order up some felpro 1206 or 1266 intake gaskets , thos ei can just get at my local napa
also picked up 100 each grams cobalt blue, and silver pearl powder ,and got a ton of .015 blue metal flake
the blue pearl gets mixed in with the black base so the car looks black but shows up blue under sunlight/light
the silver will be used for some ghost stripes and lettering , and then i may spray the entire car with the flake , or instead of ghost stripes and lettering i may just do some stripes in metal flake
ill be experimenting on the old iroc hood for the next few days to see how the different ideas come out

will have some up later this week as i play with the paint , its going to be a wild paint job for sure
if it comes out as planned a casual glance at the car should be like just looking at any other plain jane thirdgen , closer inspection will reveal all the pearl and flake in the paint though

not even close to being a painter , but i did do all the body work prep and sprayed the epoxy primer its not perfect but its damn close
i didnt fix the hood as im throwing it away in favor of a 4 or 6 inch outlaw hood
my friend is a painter and he has been helping me along the way, he actually made me prime the car

thanks ive been learning alot threw my paint project , doing it myself is the only way i could afford a nice paint job on the car
local body shop, and a very good one at that quoted me over 8k for everything i wanted ( that was with me stripping the car and doing any body/filler work which i had already done anyways )
guys on hr.com have been a big help in getting me to do it myself

Re: My $3,500 353sbc 1000hp build ( Cheap Thrills )
intake came in , this thing has enough meat to be ported to a 1207 gasket , my heads are just under a 1206.
the wieand would need a lil bit of welding to be ported to a 1206.
so either way i have a ton of room to grow with this set of heads and intake
engine bay is getting painted tommorw and on sunday ill button the engine up then next weekend we should be firing the engine up
the wieand would need a lil bit of welding to be ported to a 1206.
so either way i have a ton of room to grow with this set of heads and intake

the plan is to aim for the first or second weekend in may to hit las vegas motor speedway for some testing and getting the tune nailed down
then soon as i can ill be taking the car upto rmr in salt lake city to prove a point to a bunch of *******s.ppl in this state dont know what a fast car is or how to build one , $30/40/50k cars and cant run low 10's

Built not bought, lol. I cant wait to paint mine all satin black, I think itll look slick and I dont want to attract attention. I was throwing around the idea of doing the original Tuxedo Black from the old Corvettes, that phantom blue/black paint.
Anyway its looking good Dave!

Motor is lookin sweeeet project89!!!
I'm probably where you were on your build about 3-4 weeks ago. Between my real boring job and the weather, I'm just not getting it done near as soon as I anticipated. No biggie though, engine building is something you don't rush....if you rush, mistakes and brain farts happen.
It'll be neat to see it in the car with the hair dryers hanging off the side! Looking forward to hearing how it does!
