gear drive

Re: gear drive
I installed one on a ford 351, the customer hated it after the first month and asked to have it replaced with a double roller set. It was louder than the exhaust (dual 2" with aftermarket mufflers) and quite annoying at freeway speeds.
That being said, I have heard them on third gens with cut outs and it was manageable at idle but may be irritating on the highway. IMHO, unless you need them, a good double roller is probably a better way to go.

Re: gear drive
Same here:
Back when I was building a lot of motors, I couldn't talk somebody out of having me put one in his project. Around 3 months later he paid me again to take it back out.
Kinda like Rhoads lifters... seems like a good idea at the time [/bullitt] but the welcome wears thin pretty quick.

Re: gear drive
I ran one of those floating dual idler noisy gear drives in my race engine for a day before yanking it back out.
I now run a Milodon single fixed idler in my engine. Rock steady camshaft/distributor. No noise and will probably last longer than the engine will. They're costly and after checking out belt options, I felt it was a better bang for the buck.
For a street engine, stick with a good chain system. At least pay a little extra and buy one with billet gears.
