Smog pump question

took off the alternator today and I'm waiting for the new one to come in. While doing it I saw the smug pump underneath and it's only driven by the WP. So I have a few silly questions about it..

can i I remove it with no delete pulley and the wp still work effectively?
Which parts of the associated tubing must stay or can be removed on passenger side of engine?
will it trip the cars computer? Thanks

Re: Smog pump question

The waterpump is gonna turn regardless if the smog pump is removed or not. You should be fine. Plug the AIR tubes in the manifolds and you'll have to cap/plug/crimp the tube to the Cat Con. too.
Your really not gonna gain anything buy removing it all....and the legal stuff too. JMO

Re: Smog pump question

smog pump is a little/small load to the motor that AFAIK doesnt hurt performance enough to measure it. Your plumbing for the smog pump looks to be regulated by the ECM. Unless your sure the constant airflow from the pump will not be needed for your stock tune (air injection is stopped when not needed) then without it you should retune the ECM.

What im saying is once your ready for an ECM retune then removing it makes sense. If your not modifying the motor much and have no plans to retune for performance then I think its best left alone.

Re: Smog pump question

Thank y'all! I didn't look to thoroughly and I believe it may be hooked to the ECU so if I do remove it later I will be when or if it's retuned.

Re: Smog pump question

There are no codes related to the Smog Reactor. If you want to remove it go ahead. The computer will not care.

Re: Smog pump question

The smog pump is just an air pump. It's main purpose is to push air into the exhaust during engine warm up to help lower cold engine emissions. After the engine is at operating temperature, the smog pump does nothing.

Re: Smog pump question

Also - if you use a modern OBD-II cat, they not longer need the air injection to function well. Though it's still mandatory in some jurisdictions - if you only need to pass a sniff test then a more modern cat will handle the emissions without the use of the smog pump.

Removing all that makes the engine much more accessible.
