1989 GTA vs. LS1

A little while back we were out cruizin in the gta, the faster out of our 2 thirdgens. We had always wanted to give one of those nice LS1 powered 4th gens a run to see how we would do, but forever we had never been lined up with one. We've taken the fox body mustangs with basic upgrades easily, we've taken one of those newer mustang svt's(not the 390 hp ones) from a roll of 40 to 95, a handful of lightly modded imports, a c4 from a dig, and some others. We got walked on by a viper from 65 -100, and a modded 69 camaro, but other than that we have been pretty good against the competition in our general local area. The GTA has these modifications done to it: 355 with a Crane Compucam 2032 214/220, .495/.508, 1.6 ratio Crane Gold race rockers, AFR 190's, Edelbrock hi flo base plate, SLP semi-siamesed runners w/porting and matched to plenum, Accel 23 lb/hour injectors, afpr, k/n, SLP 1 3/4 headers, Catco dual cats, SLP catback(TOL), 700R4 w/transgo shift kit, 2200 stall, aluminum radiator, 3.23 gearing(might be slightly off), and BFG comp t/a's with 255/50/16 back, and 245/50/16 front. So this is the motor up to date as it is now, but its seen better days as far as tuning goes. When the race took place, the car had a miss, a broken tranny mount, needed oil change, idle problems, bad knock sensor, etc. So anyways, we were pulling up to a light at night, no one else around. I'm always on the look out for a nice 4th gen for us to run, and i see what are tell tell signs of one pulling up behind us. The driver changes lanes, and pulls up next to us. My bro says " think he wants to give this pos running 20 year old car a run?" The driver rolls down his window and says this, " Hey, want to get smoked?" My bro nods says we'll go at the next light(better spot to go). Normally we wouldn't do this but it was a race we've always wanted to do, and there was no one around, so why not? We are heading towards the next light ahead, all the while the guy in the ls1 does some small take off from beside our car, it sounded pretty nice, sounded like a borla. We finally line up at the light. This is a 2 lane road, that merges into 1 about a 1/4 mile up. The other driver gives 2 solid revs to us to signal he's wants some of us, so my brother gives a nice 3k rev back. He puts the 700r4 into 1st, and brings the rpms up a little bit. The light turns green after a few seconds, and from what i could tell we both launched at about the same time. The other guy had better traction than us as we had some wheel hop out of the intersection, as we approach the top of 1st, we have about 1/2 car on him, my bro powershifts it into 2nd at about 5100 and chirps the tires good, bringing us back into our powerband. mid way through 2nd, the bark of the ls1 was fading back quick as we now had at least 2-3 lengths on him. We knew once we hit 70 he was going to pull on us, but he didn't do anything more but barely inch up on us. We hit about 90 and safely merge over and slow down, embracing our unexpected win over a 4th gen. The guy tails us for about a mile to the next intersection. We get there and he has this pissed look on his face and tells us " what the hell we had in that old thing". Its fun having someone think that they are going to wipe you all over the floor and then beating them, it was funny. The guys proceeds to take off and fly down the road, as we just laughed so much. Sleepers are fun to have, everyone thinks they are going to murder our gta when they pull up next to us, but usually we can take them out of the hole. Seeing the look on that guy's face was just about the same one we saw when we beat the newer svt cobra, pure confusion So that was our race, we shouldn't have raced it with all the problems it had, but we just had to And it was weird how we were able to beat that 4th gen with it running so badly too, so we were thinking maybe our car can run mid 13's in bad shape? then maybe it could run low 13's in good shape? What do you think? Hope you enjoyed the story

If you did beat a LS1 that bad, assuming a good driver, then you are looking at high 12s or lower...

Awesome kill! Your GTA sounds like my kind of car, I love sleepers! You have a sweet setup. AFR 190's, damn good heads. Get those bugs worked out and take her to the track. I bet you're in the 12's. I can just picture the LS1 & Stang drivers saying "WTF just happened," LMAO!!

My *** thats a great car you have there. I bow to you my brother. lol.
A good story with a great ending. I love to see this kind of race. Most people think that the L98 is weak sauce but tuned right it will wipe you into a crying baby. Great Kill.

Sounds like what I want to turn my GTA into - an LS1 killer. Stroke it, make it breathe in and out better, some suspension mods and better tires - and keep it looking like a stock 3rdgen!

thanks guys

now if only we had the money to get everything tuned and running good, and make final mods to it we could be running with some vettes but having a sleeper is great because most of the time you can put up good runs with more expensive cars and such.

well, like I said, it's not running well at all, so I'm guessing it wasn't getting enough fuel to it/slowing it down.

Why are you racing with all this wrong with your car??

we don't have the money right now to fix it, and we don't race it usually how its running, but we've never had a chance to go against it, so that was our chance you know. Jocw, I think you would kill the gta, you're too fast.
