Where's the Sportsmanship?

I don't know if it's just me, or just in my area for that matter. It seems like the idea of having a friendly for-fun race is a novelty now.

We have a relatively small group of folks that meet regularly on friday nights, say 10 to 15 cars. We will all hang out in a little cul-de-sac on the outskirts of town, talk cars, whatever. We generally head over to a local "scene" of sorts after chilling for half an hour or so to converse with some other car people.

Generally we all roll into the parking lot together, pseudo single-file and go grab some coffees (this is at a Starbucks) to sip while we're chilling.

We all get into the lot and hop out, head into starbucks to grab some coffee. On my way out of this place I hear "Yea, that one right there, he drives that piece of **** stocker Camaro."

Without wanting to start anything I just laugh a little and head back to my car where everyone in our little group is congregated. We see 3 kids (literally, 15-17 at the oldest) walking up to us thinking they're gangsters or something.

Kid1: "Hey, who drives this?" Pointing at our SRT4
SRTguy "I do, whats up?"
Kid2: "You gonna race it or what?"
SRTguy "Sure, against who?"
Kid1: "Someone on our 'team' that will school you"

anyways, this goes on for about 20 minutes with these kids coming back and forth, talking **** about us and our cars, yadda yadda. Finally when everyone agrees on a place, they say they won't do it for anything less than $30.

Normally I would wipe my *** with 30 dollars, but who the hell do these ****ing kids think they are?

Anyways, now every time we roll up, these kids are driving around in their raggety-*** 5.0 with a vortech on it, never taking it about 3000RPM due to the horrible miss and backfiring that it produces when revved talking **** and trying to instigate ****. I mean, when they race this car, they let someone else on their team drive it, and try to find a ride so they can watch it run. They don't even have drivers licenses.

I miss the time when you raced for fun, with friends. Whatever.

Race them, take there $30, and shut them up.

Especially if they won't take it above 3000rpm

I don't think starbucks is exactly teenage heaven. At least he's not at the bar drinking, and trying to race.

I'd rather just go to the bar and drink period, racing is boring. How old are you? Maybe you should try something else.

I thought that Santa Barbara was part of the left coast's high society? Shouldn't they be driving a 911 turbo or something overpriced?

More than old enough to drink at a bar. I can't speak for patRIOTik.

Personally, I like to drink in the garage and wrench on something. Although hanging at the bar is fun from time to time.

I would call the cops so that they didn't kill anyone racing. Even if they drove Yugo's you could get them off the road because they didn't have licenses. It is best to just ignore idiots like them. You just stoop to their level when you race them and or egg them on. Tell them to meet you at the track. Chances are they won't show.

when i meet kids like that, I sort of look at them, look at whoever's with me, whisper loudly "i hate high school kids," and keep walking.

Wow, this thread kind of blew up.

Yea, I know. We generally don't give them a second glance. Santa Barbara is very much an example of CA's "High-Society". Lots of expensive exotic cars and whatnot. When I was living in Isla Vista (student ghetto of SB) going to college, it was a joke how many Cobras you would see just walking to the grocery store. Anyways, I moved up the coast a little bit. As far as my (small) town goes, there is only one real spot to hang out worth speaking of, and that would be said starbucks.

Stu, If racing is so boring, why do you post exclusively in "Theoretical and Street Racing"? How old are you? Maybe you should try something else.

I lived up in SB on the westside in the projects for a few months. I had MY 5.0 with me. On the 101 near the top of state st. up to golita/isla vista I would catch all sorts of races. Lots of posers/wannabees. Only decent race (only loss) was to this 03-04 cobra. He just shrugged his shoulders when I cought up.
I liked racing up there.

Hey man, dont bash on all high school kids. I know most of them are little punks and all talk or whatever. But me and a few friends of mine are serious about our cars, and don;t drive them hard. I also live in an area where the kids are driving porsches and maybe 3 or 4 ferraris (new) but i'm not so lucky. Anyhow, I love my third gen and would refuse any trade for it, even though i got it for just 6000. Anyhow, around here, there are some decent people that will just give you a quick run to like 50 or 60 just for kicks and then a smile after.

Wow, you really are in high school. LOL.

I come here because it's less boring than talking about detailing and transmissions. Also, I was saying racing is boring when there are better things to do. Whenever I go to car meets, it's always just a bunch of dudes standing around in parking lots in little cliques because no one will talk to someone that they don't know. If I'm going to just be standing around all night, put a Jack and Coke in my hand, play some loud music, add about 100 girls, and put a bar in front of me. I was just making a suggestion, since you seemed to be complaining that what you do for fun is starting to suck because retards are taking over your hobby.

I wasn't being completely serious. I am just trying to say that I have more respect for my car than the other kids with the exotics have for theirs. I mean if I could sell something for more and get another better third gen, yea I would think about it and most likely do it. Also, one reason you see alot of that, is because there isn't really much to do at our age. I was just throwing in my 2 cents and all you had to say was a bunch of crap to make me look like a jack***. Im not trying to be immature but I have noticed that most of the comments you make are completely unnecesary and often are aimed to make the person who was talking feel bad. This board is for people to be civilized and talk about a common interest, and try to be respectful about it.

rant over.

Well, its hard to understand people completely on the internet, because there is no tone of voice...so if you could point out your own sarcasm or w/e you are doing, it would be helpful.

It's not that I don't like him, I just thought that one statement he made was uncalled for. And then I realized that he was joking, but I could not tell before, because he couldn't use a tone of voice through typing. Sorry for the confusion.

I dunno but I race people just for the hell of it. Usually dont even know them and no words are spoken. Just need to know how to spot other guys into it and let them spot you, then keep cruzing the spots all night. But hey if some punks wants to talk **** and make it more exciting, so what. And if he wants to race for money, even better.

Just like in the real world buddy, there are "all sorts" in the street racing world aswell. It's just a matter of differentiating the different types. Doesn't matter where you go or where you're from.

I wouldn't say racing isn't a sport. There are many hardcore fans out there who would disagree with ya.

I meant to put a in my post. I'm just saying that you can't expect much sportsmanship from an activity that isn't even a sport. Like street fighting for example.

I agree with this statement. I don't get poople who take the racing so seriously when it's random guy light to light. If it's a race you don't think they should win and they do, either you are stupid or not a good driver, or they've done their homework on their car. Losses on the street aren't fun, but wins more than make up for it. Just gotta use common sense and watch out for cops!

I don't get how working on, driving, racing, and such as a hobby for fun get's all turned into talking smack and dissing everyone. haha ya ricers are gay, but they are doing the same thing you are, just with smaller engines. It's all for fun why does everyone have to turn in into like a fight. It's turning into less of a hobby and more of a reason to start crap.

it's alot more than a hobby, it's a whole life.

- All my friends are into cars
- I usually only associate with people who are into cars
- I constantly talk about cars
- My paycheck is used for gas and car parts, with $20 for food
- My parents own an automotive shop
- I work as a mechanic
- I have so many car parts in my garage I can't walk in there

Etc. I'm sure most of the other people here are like that.

Cars aren't a sport, but there is an unwritten rulebook for those of us that are true enthusiasts, one of those rules being "Don't be an ******* in a street race," with many sub paragraphs haha.

I get upset when I see people talking trash about what someone else is doing with their car, it's really annoying. I tend to just try to ignore those people because they're either A. Highschool kids, or B. Ignorant old men who think their Nova was the fastest thing on the planet and NONE of our cars can come close. PLEASE.

Good point. I really think this Theoretical and Street Racing forum should be shutdown because all it seems to do is invite non-thirdgen car owners, which poke fun at thirdgen owners, which is why crap is started. Its almost like a non-tech thirdgen forum. However, on the positive side, it gives thirdgen owners a little information about racing other cars.

On the contrary, I think they should have a lounge section. Most of the members just want to BS with each other sometimes, so alot of that is done here. I like this section, and come to read it alot.

And the non-thirdgen owners here (myself included) come to give insight on other cars, I don't think there's any non-3rdgen owner here that just trolls people.

Stu, are you saying that by definition, street racing isn't a sport because it isn't a paid position?
Even if it is something unpaid, impromptu, and childish, I still think that participants should be decent to the people that make up the community.

sport ( P ) Pronunciation Key (spôrt, sprt)

1. A physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.
I think racing fits that mold rather nicely.

Anyways, I posted this thing weeks ago, didn't relize it hadn't dissapeared by now.

TGO will never have an off topic forum. There was too many problems with an off topic forum before so TGO will forever be a technical place.

And unfortunately this thread has strayed too far away from it's original techincal purpose.

I think you answered your own question with that statement. Simple ambiguous comments turn into WW3 on message baords. Louges attract non-contributing members who have nothing better to do than to stir up trouble. Lounges would work if people just talked about cars and such but that doesn't happen. Sure you have those that behave but then you have those that post just to get banned and to cause trouble. They then tell their friends to post the same garbage because they have nothing better do to and their mom won't drive them to the mall. That is more work that us mods don't need.

People also don't seem to understand why the word 'ricers' is censored either. If you're insulting people for no other reason than the car they drive how does that lend itself to a calm enjoyable forum to read? If you want to simply bash other people's cars and say how slow they are and how super awesome fast your 2.8 is then go to someplace like laughatrice.com where they make fun of stock civics. It is completely possible to discuss cars and races without using a derogatory term to describe them.

It is good to have non-thirdgen owners around to correct the rabid brand loyalty that allows people to think that the third generation F-body was the be-all-end-all of performance automobiles. I know this will be an unpopular statement that many of you will not believe and become angry at, possibly causing you to go into a corner and weep heavily for hours or even days, but there are faster cars than thirdgens. Some of them even were not made in Van Nuys California or the United States at all!

There have been thousands of different cars through the years. It is very difficult bordering on impossible to know the performance specs of them all much less their capabilities when modded. It is difficult for a limited scope tech board such as this to have members who know about different cars and also own a thirdgen AND want to post on the theoretical and street racing board. Therefore stu and people like stu are more than welcome to stay and post and educate people on what cars that many of us may not know about can do. Remember, there is a world outside of your town and just because all that is there are 8 second street driven domestics does not mean that an 8 second street legal and driven AWD Eagle Talon isn't a couple towns away.

Thirdgen.org is a Tech board. Tech boards do not lend themselves to lounges as the lounge leaks out into the tech forums. We don't need people getting bad advice because of an argument they had in the lounge.

If you don't agree with the rules and the policies set forth by the moderation team then do not post on this board or waste everyone's time by starting threads complaining about it as they are off topic and will lead in the best case scenario a lock and in the more severe cases to your probation or banning. Feel free to PM any of the mods with your issues and we will deal with them in a fair and just manner provided they warrant concern.
